Health and Human Development - Primary healthcare
Primary healthcare
The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund
(UNICEF) sponsored an international conference on Public Healthcare. It
occurred in Alma-Ata, Russia, in 1978. This conference launched the
movement towards 'Health for All' by the year 2000, based on primary
healthcare. Primary healthcare includes the following nine elements:
* access to adequate water
* access to safe sanitation
* adequate nutrition
* immunisation against diseases
* treatment for cuts and common illnesses
* maternal and child care and family planning advice
* education in regard to nutrition and preventative health methods
* community participation in decision-making in regard to preventative
health planning
* training village health workers to diagnose and treat common illnesses
and injuries
This approach endeavours to bring healthcare as close as possible to where
people work and live. The World Health Organisation promotes primary
healthcare for the world's less developed countries, as it is a cheaper and
more effective means of improving the health of many people.
