Information Technology - Health and safety effects arising from
organisational change: changed manual skills needed to operate smaller
items of technology

Changed manual skills needed to operate smaller items of technology

Image.

The advent of miniaturisation has allowed many pieces of equipment to be
recreated in ever-smaller packages. Often, this is done with the intention
of making information more portable. Recent items designed to make
information access easier include mobile telephones, personal organisers
and palm-top computers. One impact of these smaller items of technology has
been the necessity to develop different methods to operate them. Users of
these products must learn different operating skills to compensate for the
size of the equipment.

Discussion questions;

Changed manual skills needed to operate smaller items of technology

1. Identify a small item of technology that has a larger, but functionally similar, counterpart. What specific differences exist between the way the two devices carry out the phases of information processing?

2. Compare the two devices in terms of efficiency and effectiveness.

3 How do these small devices take into account use by people with disabilities?

4. What might be some specific OH&S concerns relating to smaller devices? Consider this in relation to the phases of information processing.

5 What are some other alternatives for human interaction with small items of technology? For example, you could consider the appropriateness of voice or facial or hand gestures in your answer.
