Psychology -> Alcohol

Alcohol

Alcohol: One of the most widely used drugs, alcohol is a depressant to the central nervous system. This means that it depresses or slows down the functioning of the body's cells and organs until they are less efficient. Its effect on the brain influences the centre responsible for co-ordinating the senses, perception, speech and judgment.

One of the short-term effects of excessive alcohol is distorted vision. It alters one's perceptions and can reduce attention and concentration to external stimuli. Therefore, a person under the influence of alcohol may not be fully attending to the environment and may find it difficult to make judgments about objects around them. For example, they might miscalculate the space between them and a chair or the distance of an oncoming car.

Central nervous system damage is a long-term effect of heavy alcohol use. Alcohol can effect the cerebellum, the structure of the brain which coordinates eye and hand movements.
