Psychology -> Psychological factors

Psychological factors

Perceptual set (expectancy): Our past life experiences, especially those which have had significant personal meaning, contribute to the establishment of a perceptual expectancy, that is, a tendency to perceive stimuli in a specific way. We interpret new stimuli in accordance with what we have already experienced. Some types of stimuli are ignored while others are attended to and we tend to see what we expect to see.

For example, as our experience with police cars is that they have a siren on the roof, if we quickly see a vehicle with a siren, out of the corner of our eye, we might automatically assume it is a police car. On a second look, we realise it is another type of vehicle and initially perceived what we expected to see.
