Is there any margin of error as far as the use of the EEG is concerned?

sleep walking is a state consciousness that can be easily observed, so to say that states of consiousness cannot be observed is a over simplification. EEG's are useful, I'd hardly describe then conclusive. Sleep studies often fail to yield any useful information, yet the condition may persist regardless of a clean bill of health according to the EEG results. Brain wave patterns, even in sleep states can be incorrectly interpreted if psychological factors are present that directly influence neurological states by their interruption of normal neural activity

Psychology -> Altered States of Consciousness: Measurement of Physiological Responses Measurement of physiological responses Measurement of physiological responses which can indicate different states of consciousness: electrical activity of the brain and other physiological responses, including heart rate, body temperature and galvanic skin response. A state of consciousness cannot be observed or measured directly. However, psychologists use various tools to detect changes in levels of consciousness. The electroencephalograph (EEG) is used to measure the electrical activity of the brain. Changes in brain wave patterns provide psychologists with information about a person's level of consciousness. The EEG has proven most useful in the identification of the different stages of sleep.

Since changes in our physiology can indicate a state of consciouness, what is the clear connection between physiology and psychology?
