Outdoor Education - Land as a commodity

Land as a commodity

The concept of the land as a commodity is the predominant perception in
our society today. All land is given a financial value, even areas of
wilderness [1] such as National Parks are now being asked to pay for
themselves through tourism and recreation. In a society driven mainly by
money it is easy to see how perceptions can affect the conflict surrounding
land use. There are numerous examples of the debate that rages between
using land for monetary gain or for conservation. Issues relating to land
rites, mining in National Parks, developing skiing resorts, building
chemical waste dumps on wetlands, building large hotels and huts in areas
of natural wilderness, and the extinguishment of native title, all
fundamentally relate back to the perception people have of the land.
Balancing land use is a very complex task, for each argument on one side
there is an opposing case on the other, therefore it is important to look
at what are the facts behind the propaganda.
