Aboriginal People
To Aboriginal people the land provides all physical and spiritual needs.
It's a living thing, a dynamic place of creation. Pat Dodson (past Council
for Aboriginal Reconciliation Chairperson) has written "Land isn't just
bound up with geographical limitations that are placed on it by a surveyor,
who marks out a plot and says: 'This is your plot'. Land is the generation
point of existence; it's the maintenance of existence; it's the spirit from
which aboriginal existence comes. It's a place, a living thing made up of
sky, of clouds, of rivers, of trees, of the wind, of the sand, and of the
Spirit that's created all of those things; the Spirit that has planted my
own spirit there, my own country. It's something and yet it's not a thing;
it's a living entity." It is this spiritual and physical link with the land
that manifests itself in the way Aboriginals use the land now and in the
past.
