In the module you learnt:
Gaining consent from participants.
Availability of participants time to engage.
Permission to access space and activities.
Challenges of Access
Social, cultural and economic differences.
Differences in beliefs, values and identities.
Mistrust of the researchers.
Perception of identities.
Familiarity helps in building rapport with the participant. This comes from spending time with the participants in common spaces and chatting informally on common topics.
Means to be part of a community, absorbing their behaviours and being both the insider and the outsider.
Ethics in Engagement
Ethnography requires us to ask people to share about themselves. This causes the participant to be vulnerable
As researchers, we should also share about ourselves so that there is shared vulnerability.
Researchers need to consider the participants and their wishes while doing their studies.
Covert and Overt Research
Covert research is when participants are not aware of being part of a study.
Overt research is where the participants are aware of the study and its objectives.
