ALISON CEO Urges Educators to Engage with Technology

ALISON CEO Mike Feerick urged Australian academics to engage with technology, when joined a lively TV-style panel discussion on the future of education, at Melbourne’s RMIT University in December.

Mike visited RMIT - a global university of technology and design – as part of a series of speaking engagements in Australia.

RMIT held a Festival of Learning and Teaching to focus on the use of technology and social media in educational institutions. Tools from videocasting to Google Drive to virtual labs and classrooms, were discussed in detail by experts in the area of educational technology.

A novel part of the Festival was a panel discussion based on the hugely popular Q&A show, screened weekly on ABC Television. The event invited members of the public to gather the views of Mr Feerick and other education experts on the topic of ‘Teaching’s Future: Face-to-Face or Facebook?’

Dr Judy McGannon from Design and Social Context (DSC), RMIT University, chaired the panel, on which Mr Feerick was joined by Futurist and former Minister for Science the Hon. Barry Jones AC and social media whiz-kid, formerly of Monash University, Samantha Vardanega.

Commenting on Q&A session, Pauline Porcaro, Educational Developer - Inclusive Teaching Project at RMIT described Mr Feerick's contribution as "a breath of fresh air".

"Mike spoke with passion on why educators must engage with technology and move into the 21st century if we are to inspire accessible learning," she noted. "His analogy of the speedy change from horse and carriage to the motor car, drove home the message of how modern education is now sitting on the edge of momentous change; it's time to get off the horse and speed ahead!"
