"Last July, ALISON published Understanding the Ebola Virus and How You Can Avoid It, a short, interactive course that has now been completed by 20,000 learners, free of charge,” reports Forbes Magazine. “Beyond assisting these individuals in protecting and empowering themselves, the course also sparked a movement of learners who then used their knowledge to educate others. In Ghana, a young man named Vincent Boateng began traveling from church to church to present his new found information to local congregations. Journalist Orlind Cooper in Liberia credited the course with giving him the courage to visit Ebola treatment units and encourage colleagues to do the same. Similar testimonials have poured in to the ALISON website since. Education’s ripple effect is clearly a very powerful thing.

“But Feerick remains frustrated, reporting that he’s encountered major barriers in his attempts at collaboration with global health organizations.’What we’re providing in West Africa is exactly what people need. And it’s not about invention, but innovation—using what’s already there but being creative in how we put it together. We’ve contacted the World Health Organisation many times saying there are quicker ways of getting information to people and we’ve never heard back from them, despite the course getting international publicity.’

“Feerick attributes the lack of response to risk aversion, the perceived threat newcomers bring to funding models, and possibly a lack of familiarity with the popularity of ALISON worldwide. However, he is quick to add that the course has been developed strictly on the published advice of the WHO and the US-based Centre for Disease Control. In fact, as knowledge about the threat increases, new information can be instantly integrated into the online courseware.”
