In this module, you will be introduced to the publication of Errata and the aspects of memory which are an inherent part of many discussions in the context of Salman Rushdie's novel 'Midnight’s Children'. This text is a political allegory that narrates the story of modern India. Next, you will learn about the political nature of the act of writing; what are the narrative elements and what strategies are adopted. Finally, you will learn about diasporic experiences in Jhumpa Lahiri's short story.

In this module, you will be introduced to the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and T.S. Eliot. The module will examine the short story, 'Balthazar's Marvellous Afternoon', written by Marquez. This story has a linear narrative with subtle messages and preferences. You will also learn about 'The Waste Land', by Eliot. It is a modernist poem and one of the most difficult of the 20th-century. It is considered an iconic representative literary piece of the modernist period.

In this module, you will be introduced to the works of a French philosopher, Sartre, and Sylvia Plath, an American poet. Sartre's poem, 'The Wall' enjoys a canonical status due to classical literature references and the narratives. You will learn about the ways in which the personal and the political intersect Sylvia Plath's ideas of feminism, marriage, gender stereotypes and social pressures through her poem, 'The Applicant'.

In this module, you will be introduced to the concept of womanism, as defined by Alice Walker. This is a social theory based on the history and everyday experiences of women of colour, especially black women. You will examine the work of J.D. Salinger, 'Catcher in the Rye'. You will also learn the role of literature in bridging the gap between protest and democracy through a play by Tendulkar, 'Silence! The Court is in Session'.

In this module, you will be introduced to the works of Christopher Marlowe, Rynunosuke Akutagawa, Franz Kafka and Nikolai Gogol. You will examine Marlowe's play 'Dr. Faustus' and Akutagawa's short story, 'In a Grove' for the role of power and honour. You will also learn how sexuality, religion and issues with identity define and influence Kafka's work, 'The Metamorphosis'. Finally, you will learn how the bureaucratic systems drive a man into madness in 'Diary of a Madman' by Gogol.

In this module, you will be introduced to the political and erotic fantasy of a character as you continue with Gogol's 'Diary of a Madman. You will learn about the exile experience and the consequences of globalisation from a postcolonial perspective in Kiran Desai's 'The Inheritance of Loss'. Melville's short story, 'Bartleby the Scrivener' will be discussed and you will study the cultural and economic perspectives in the idea of the self-made man in Fitzgerald's 'The Great Gatsby'.
