The way in which a space is illuminated makes a significant difference in how it is perceived and how it can be used. Therefore, lighting should be one of a designer’s primary concerns when putting together a plan for a room. Broadly speaking, light can be divided into two main categories – natural and artificial. When working with natural light, take note of where and how it falls during the day. Light and shadow can make a room appear bigger or smaller than it is in reality and change the apparent proportions of furniture and accessories. You need to be familiar with common light-related terminology before selecting fixtures and fittings and understand the advantages and disadvantages of various types of lighting. Whether you are working with natural or artificial light, it is useful to think about light sources as serving one of three functions – as an ambient light source, a target light source, or a light source that highlights particular accessories and features within a room. Candles, fairy lights, lanterns and other accessories can also add another dimension to a space. Not only must you choose a lighting system that works well within the space, you also need to make sure that it is practical, sustainable and fits in with the overall décor.
