Terms Associated with Carbon Steel Pipes and Fittings
Black Steel Pipe
A steel pipe that is black in color. As it is used as gas and air-pressure pipe, it should not be used where corrosion will affect its uncoated surface.
This tool holds the pipe in a vise while cutting with a chain that has cutting wheels.
A fitting that connects four lengths of pipe in a cross-like shape in a distribution system.
A device used to cut threads on pipes.
Ground Joint Union

Double Extra Strong
An industry standard measurement of the weight or strength of a steel pipe. Also referred to as Schedule 120.
An industry standard measurement of the weight or strength of a steel pipe. Also referred to as Schedule 80.
A fitting that connects two pipes. A flange is screwed onto the end of each pipe that needs to be joined and then bolted together with nuts and bolts. A gasket in between flanges makes it a leak-proof seal.
A pipe electroplated with zinc to provide a protective coating that resists corrosion or oxidation (rust).
The sealing material used when joining lengths of pipe. It is also referred to as pipe dope.
Wrench-like tools with a length of chain used to tighten large pipes. It is also referred to as a chain wrench.
A tape used to wrap the threads of a pipe before joining to ensure a watertight, secure fit.
An industry standard measurement of the weight or strength of a steel pipe. Also referred to as Schedule 40.
A component of a hand threader or power threader that holds the die.
A wrench used to hold chrome plated or other types of finished pipe so that there are no jaw marks or scratches left on the pipe.
The length of pipe that gets screwed in a fitting when joining threaded pipe.
A tool with jaws that firmly holds a piece of pipe and prevents it from turning.
