One of the advantages of CSST is that it does not require special tools to cut and join. The cutters used for CSST are similar to pipe cutters used to cut copper pipe.

1. Place the cutter along the pipe at the place where you want to cut.
2. Tighten the adjuster knob, forcing the cutting wheel against the CSST.
3. Rotate the cutter around the tube, maintaining constant pressure.
Once the CSST has been cut to the proper length, it can be connected to appliances or other pipes using special threaded fittings.
Threaded fittings can be made from the following materials:
• Black malleable iron
When running CSST and fittings through openings in walls, floors, or ceilings, ensure that the hole is at least 1.27 cm larger than the pipe diameter.
Connecting CSST to Appliances
Use straight fittings to connect a CSST pipe to a fixed appliance or other device.
The following are the steps to connect CSST to appliances:
1. Begin by connecting the bushing to the CSST pipe. This should be done in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
2. Install the fitting adapter to the device to which the pipe will be connected.
3. Tighten the adapter on the appliance connection using the nut.
Connecting CSST to CSST
Lengths of CSST can be spliced together using mechanical coupling fittings. Couplings consist of a fitting adapter, bushings, and a nut. Like straight fittings, coupling fittings are simple to assemble.
The steps to connect CSST to CSST are as follows:
1. Begin by connecting the bushings to the ends of the CSST pipes according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
2. Then, connect the bushings to the fitting adapter and tighten the adapter using the nut.
Tee fittings can be used to connect a branch line to a pipe run at a 90-degree angle. The fitting is designed so that, as the gas changes directions, the pressure and velocity remain the same as when the gas entered the tee.
Gas piping systems are inspected and tested in accordance with local applicable codes.
CSST installations are visually inspected and subjected to a pressure test before they are certified safe for use.
The entire system must be visible for the inspector; underground pipe, as well as pipe located behind walls, floors, and ceilings, may not be covered up or sealed until it has been inspected and approved.
CSST Gas Pipe Testing
CSST gas piping is tested using a pressure test.
All outlets are sealed, and air is pumped into the system at a pressure of at least 10 psig for at least 15 minutes. This pressurized system is then inspected for leaks.
This testing method is used for both standard pressure and elevated pressure systems.
