Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing
Fuel gases such as natural gas and liquid petroleum (LP) gas are commonly used for cooking, heating, and power generation.
Plumbers are responsible for installing safe and efficient fuel gas systems. One of the most popular methods among plumbers for delivering fuel gas is to use corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST).
CSST is a flexible stainless steel tube encased in a jacket made of polyethylene (PE) plastic. Today it is an alternative to rigid gas pipe.
As of 2003, all national model codes recognize CSST as an approved gas piping material.
CSST has several advantages over other types of gas piping, such as black steel, PE, or copper.
1. It is delivered in precut lengths coiled on drums, which allows the pipe to be loaded and carried more easily.
2. It is lighter than rigid pipe and does not require special tools to cut or install.
3. Because it can be bent, CSST does not require angle fittings, such as elbow, to go around the corner.
4. The labor time and costs required to install CSST are reduced to as much as half when compared to the costs incurred by other types of pipe.
5. CSST is sold as a complete system, including pipe, fittings, and connections.

• CSST is manufactured in sizes ranging from 1/8 inch to 5.08 cm in diameter.
• The maximum operating pressure and the words 'fuel gas piping' are marked at regular intervals.
• The maximum allowable operating system pressure for gas systems is 5 PSIG.
• Ball valves and gas cocks are installed in CSST systems to shut off gas flow quickly. A handle on the outside of the valve body rotates the valve’s ball into the opened or closed position.
• CSST can be run directly from the building meter to each appliance by using connectors. All connectors and lines should be of the same size otherwise the difference will increase or decrease the gas pressure.
• CSST can also be connected using manifolds. Manifolds connect a single gas line to multiple appliances without repeated cuts along the line for each branch.
