Actually, this module 7 is well explained and understood. 1. Identify the design variable used to control the global firm IT information Technology variables that are focus on communications, such as electronic links, technological matrixing ,electronic customer/supplier relationships and virtural components, are available to help manage, control and coordinate the global firm and its staff and operations. 2. List the nine impact of globalization A. Rationalized Manufacturing B. Worldwide Purchasing C. Integrated customer Service D. Global Economies of Scale E. Global Products F. World wide Roll- out of products G. Subsidizing Markets H. Managing risk across currencies I. The growing irrelevance of national borders. 3. 4. Discuss the four major types of international business strategy. The four are as follows; 1. Global strategy 2. Transnational strategy 3. International strategy 4. multinational strategy. 1. Global strategy - A global strategy goes with efficiency, because there is strong central control from headquarters and economies come from standard product designs and global manufacturing. Also require extensive communications and control system which help to centrally manage the global firm. 2. Transnational strategy does everything . It also seek global efficiency while retaining local responsiveness. The activities includes cooperation among headquarters and foreign subsidiaries. It also obtains advantage of global integration, efficiency and innovation. 3. International strategy is much like the multinational as there are autonomous local subsidiares and their sub- sidiaries are very dependent on headquarters for new products and process.Example, is a pharmaceuticals company The reacher headquarters company develops products for introduction all over the worls. It also receive approval by local governments and local maketing. 4. Multinational strategy depends on local responsiveness. Subsidiaries operate autonomously The advantage of this is that the firm can quickly respond to different local needs and opportunities. It also reduces the need for communication because local subsidiaries can make decisions. Again, the result from the headquarters have to be monitored. 5. Identify the problem of managing a global organization. Aglobal organization needs enough up-date tools/ information for smoothly and efficitively. Coordination and communication are the major problem for the global firm . But large firm is very difficult to coordinate. secondly, different countries have different laws and regulations, it may be impossibl to share programs among foreign location without making special modifications for unique requirements in each country. Third local unique features, is when designing applications, there are real and percieve featurs in each country. Designers, especially those representing headquarters must recognize what features are required for a system to work in a country and what features are there as an exercise in local independence. Managers must also be aware that more and more firms. What to build a world wide communications network to take advantage of communications, and coordination tools to move data freely around the world. This method can be a major challenge, because of different technical standards and regulations. some countries also regulates the type of telecommunication equipments that can be used on their network. In some countries internet is highly censored, even websites and social networks that are pervasive in the West are banned, eg use of google search engine in China, Mainland etc in the past 6. List the government requirements that may affect global information systems. A number of governments problem that may affect global information are ;- A. A requirement to purchase specific equipment B. A requirement to do certain kinds of processing in the host country before data can be sent electronically to another country. C. Restrictions on the use of satellites and special requirments for building private networks. D. Limited access to high speed internet E. Restrictions on internet access and efforts to censor websits. 7. Explain what is meant by trans-border data flows. Trans-border data flows is the flow of electronic data across political boundaries, such as state or countries and a process which can cause legal conflicts, such as who own's a particular piece of infomation and who may use it. 8. Discuss the six strategies for managing IT in a global environment. THEY ARE AS FOLLOWS; Concentrate on inter- organizational linkages. - The strategy of creating linakages with suppliers and customers can be extremely effctive internationally. It can also be very difficult to set up these linkages ,because of differeing letelecommunications capabilities in different countries, and internet is one of the solution for easy and quick establishing linkages. Establish global systems development skills - It have many problem in managing it, when participants are from the same location. Coordination multinational project teams presents an even greater challenges . Laguages and distance make them difficult too. Again hiring of staff with appropriate skills to work on tchnology can be difficult. Build an infractures - Expenses on infractures can also pove voilatine. Infractures is parts of technology that does not have an immediate benefit, e.g worldwide communications network, one money centre bank . Take advantage of liberalized electronic communications - Deregulation ofcommunication networks swept most developed countries in the world. Strive for uniform data -Sharing data is identifying , stating the ship date and in another the date the item left the loading dock. Develop Guidelines for shared vervus local system - You need to develop guidelines , on when system should be shared when the local autonomous system is morebappropriate. Its advantages are economies of scale and ability to share data, but the problemin shaing becomes large and complex individual locations and users have special needs that must be incorporated into the system and as the number increases the system becomes cumbersome or difficult to program. 9. List the four possible business models of an international firm. The four business models are as follows;- 1. Independence operations 2. Headquarters Driven 3. Intellectual synergy 4. Integrated Global IT
