    Tell the government to exercise to FEEL IT for themselves and the economy should flourish!

    Exercise can get people talking (while exercising). Exercise may help deter or subside anxiety and enhance mood. Exercise is something that a person can concentrate on and relieve stress. Exercise can naturally release endorphins.

    There really are not a lot of studies done on the benefits of exercise on mental health. Graduate studies do not normally teach exercise as a treatment option. Why aren't more graduate programs adapting exercise as a treatment for mental health illnesses into their curriculum?

    The quality of research of the effects of exercise on mental is not great because each physical exercise has different results on the body and the mind. For instance, Yoga is supposed to be relaxing and meditative. This may be able to relieve some stress or anxiety from some individuals but in others it may increase anxiety and stress if the individual is not very good at Yoga. Should each type of exercise be researched using different people with different personalities, body types and mental illness? Does it make a difference if the individual in the experiment does not have a mental illness?

    Research should be ongoing for mental health and exercise. I wonder why the food/depression connection is so strong. Say, the urge to eat comfort foods while depressed, is it a chemical imbalance and or a craving based on brain chemicals. Sometimes physical activity does not affect the depression as much as the food.

    The comment from the speaker says exercise will not change your total illness. So, it only affects it by boosting self esteem, endorphins and reduces anxiety.. I feel what he meant to say it is not a total cure but it helps

    Mention the types of research backing the importance of exercising

    Scientific evidence makes it more 'real'. Exercise has a positive effect on reducing depression. Interesting that it isn't a conclusive study because of the time period of the study. In combination with other psychotherapy it has a much more profound result. Mood can be altered, weight managment can affect a person's self esteem, anxiety is reduced. Exercise regardless of the state of mental health is nothing but positive It can reduce as well as defend against stressors, anxiety, and depressive thoughts. The article we read prior to this does warn against over exercising - which can lead to anxiety, stress and exhaustion. Fine line between enough and too much.

    I used to work in Mental Hospital and I never saw anybody exercising. How this is possible? I mean, if the exercise is helping you and is very important in your life, then how come Mental Hospitals don't do some aerobics with the patients?

    It is important to have valid research and strong evidence to support exercise as treatment. Not only will exercise improve physical health it will also increase someone's self esteem. An increase in self esteem helps with mood and depression. That, coupled with credible research in support of the link between mental health and physical activity could prompt the government to fund exercise programs as treatment for diseases. It is important for those who are used as samples to engage in exercise in order to improve the studies and ensure the funding.
