Windows and Exterior Doors
The final step in drying-in a house is closing off the structure with windows and exterior doors.

There are so many types and styles of windows and exterior doors, made by so many manufactures, that all the possibilities cannot be covered in this module.

The purpose of this module is to introduce you to the special terms you will need to know and to give you an overview of the various kinds of windows and exterior doors and the important installation practices related to them.

Casing
The trim around a window or door.

Curb
A framework on which a skylight is mounted.

Flashing
Sheet metal strips used to seal a roof or wall against leakage.

Glazing
Material such as glass or plastic used in windows, skylights, and doors.

Hipped
The external angle formed by the meeting of two adjacent sloping sides.

Jamb
The top and sides of a door or window frame that are in contact with the door or sash.

Lights
The glass inserts in a door.

Muntin
A thin framework used to secure panes of glass in a door.

Rail
The horizontal member of a window sash or panel door.

Sash
The part of a window that holds the glass.

Sill
The lowest member of a window or exterior door frame.

Stile
The vertical member of a window sash or panel door.
