Participating in sport: socio-cultural factors - income and socio-economic status Income and socio-economic status Your socio-economic status may be a determining factor in allowing you to take up sports, such as alpine skiing and equestrian, both of which are expensive. The facilities available in communities of lower income may be more limited. Opportunities for training, equipment, coaching, uniforms etc., are all influenced by the level of disposable income a person has. Income directly influences choices, and at an extreme level, can be seen in the very low participation rates of unemployed people in organised activities. Income will influence the range, amount and duration of participation.
