    an event that requires more carbohydrate than your body has stored, it is likely that you will run out of carbo stores at some stage during the event. This is commonly referred to as hitting the wall. Most endurance athletes have at least one story to tell of this phenomenon. As a result of hitting the wall, your body, which is depleted of carbohydrate, must rely on higher percentages of fat for fuel. As the body cannot produce the same amount of energy when it burns fat, you cannot keep moving at the same intensity.

    Hitting the wall If you compete in an event that requires more carbohydrate than your body has stored, it is likely that you will run out of carbo stores at some stage during the event. This is commonly referred to as hitting the wall. Most endurance athletes have at least one story to tell of this phenomenon. As a result of hitting the wall, your body, which is depleted of carbohydrate, must rely on higher percentages of fat for fuel. As the body cannot produce the same amount of energy when it burns fat, you cannot keep moving at the same intensity. You have no choice but to slow down - even to walk if it gets really bad. It is not a pleasant feeling and the only way to fix the problem is to eat carbohydrates!
