The role of the media

Prior to the introduction of television, the advertising of food took
place through newspapers, radio, magazines and billboards. This impact was
not as powerful as that now experienced through the use of television.
Advertising aimed at specific audiences is very strong and effective. For
example, family restaurants, confectionery and novel foods are aimed at
children. The marketing messages created through the use of cartoon
characters, jingles and fast movement strongly impact on the consumers at
the time of purchase.

(a) If children's diets are influenced by television, what are the likely
health problems they may experience now and in the future?

(b) The article suggests milk products were not well advertised. List the
foods you would see as important to advertise for children and justify each
of these.
