Profit margin rather than health determines the foods available in the
supermarket. Food items must have a fast turnover to be retained. For
example, supermarkets are beginning to stock a wider range of Asian foods
now that a larger percentage of the population is using these foods. Food
manufacturers have used the spices and flavours of many Asian foods to
create a range of products that are milder in flavour and acceptable to a
larger percentage of the population. Giant international food corporations
control the whole process of providing food from the grower to the

But all of these foods and services cost more to the consumer. More time
can be available for busy individuals and families if they plan their food
shopping; buy, prepare and store foods when there is time so that less
preparation time is required at busier times of the week; buy some foods
that have been minimally prepared, e.g. meat short cuts.
Low socio-economic families may not have the nutrition and health
knowledge to make the best food choices for the money they have available.
In some suburban areas, councils and voluntary support groups provide
programs to assist families to shop for food.
The amount of money you have also determines what you can buy. When money
is limited, the choice and variety of food is usually also limited.
