Health and Human Development - Factors that affect food selection:
equipment in the home
Equipment in the home
Improvements in technology have led to better facilities for storing,
preparing and cooking food in the home. Freezers, refrigerator containers
that keep food fresh longer, small bench equipment and the microwave oven
have all increased the food options available and decreased the time needed
to prepare meals. The microwave has also changed the way many foods are
packaged. Ready-prepared meals and snack foods require little knowledge,
skill or time to prepare, making them ideal for children, the elderly and
individuals who live alone. They make it possible for individual members of
a family to eat different types of food at different times. This has
contributed to the loss of the family meal table.
