Health and Human Development - Factors that affect food selection:
developments in technology

Developments in technology

The latter half of this century has seen enormous developments in
technology that have significantly changed the kind of food we eat, the
variety of foods available and increased the time that foods can be stored
in the home, thus changing our shopping habits.

During the 1920s, the electric refrigerator was introduced. While it had a
significant effect on the food storage and buying patterns, the impact was
not really felt in the home until the 1950s, when most homes had
refrigerators, and the 1960s, when large freezer compartments were built in
domestic models.

This enabled families to have ice cream available at all times and frozen
vegetables, meats and desserts became popular.

The establishment of large international food companies such as Kraft,
Peters, Cadbury and Nestle in the 1920s opened the doors for mass
production of food products.

In the 1950s, the self-serve store took over from the single purpose food
store. Through the 60s, 70s and 80s these grew into supermarkets displaying
an ever-increasing range of pre-packaged and ready-to-mix foods. In the
1990s, self-service food supermarkets expanded into full-scale self-service
of all domestic goods.
