Health and Human Development - Health for all

Health for all

Health For All [1] is a level of health attainment that should allow
everyone to lead socially and economically productive lives. It endeavours
to reduce the inequality in health status between population groups. Health
For All [2]requires the involvement and commitment of governments at the
highest level. It requires long-term strategies that address lifestyles,
healthy environments and health impact of public policies as well as
healthcare. The importance of primary level healthcare, health promotion
and disease prevention needed to be encompassed whilst also promoting the
importance of community involvement and international trade cooperation in
health.

The Health For All [3] strategy emerged from the 30th World Health
Assembly. It recognised that access to adequate food, shelter, education,
water, sanitation, secure work and a useful role in society were
prerequisites for health for all. This strategy also recognised an
inequality of illness throughout the population. This was due to social,
economic and cultural factors such as income, education, availability of
transport and access to employment or social welfare. The Health For All
strategy recognised that the main determinants of health were outside the
healthcare system and so required the involvement and commitment of
governments at the highest level. Issues of equity or fairness need to be
addressed and the strategies should be long-term and placed in relationship
to health and quality of life. The Health for All strategy addressed
lifestyle, healthy environments and the health impact of public policies as
well as healthcare.
