In the inquisitorial system the judge conducts the case. His role is to lead the investigation, examine the evidence and question the witness. A code of rules is employed. The system is used in Europe, not the UK. The inquisitorial system is used in legal systems based on civil or Roman law.

Inquisitorial System of Trial: Definition The inquisitorial system of trial is a method of trial used in jurisdictions where the civil law (as opposed to the common law or British system of law) is used including Germany, Italy, and France. The judge or magistrate has central control over the conduct of cases, calling for evidence and questioning witnesses. The emphasis is on the search for truth in litigation. The rules of evidence are far broader than those used in the adversary system.

Basically, there are two systems of trial: inquisitorial and adversary. UK uses adversary and it involves individuals of civil society to be part of jury. I would consider adversary system of trial to be much fair comparing to inquisitorial one as power is within civil society not with judges.
