    There are many laws in the UK. The laws can be classified into categories to make things easier. One classification is public and private law. Another is civil and criminal. Civil Law protection the rights of individuals. Examples of civil laws are family law, property law, tort and contract law. Civil law aims to return the person whose rights have been infringed back to their original position. Criminal Law protects the entire community against such things as murder, theft and assaults. The aim of criminal law are to apprehend, prosecute and punish people who have broken the law and to deter others from breaking the law. In practice civil and criminal may overlap.

    normally criminal laws are against the state and the state takes over proceedings even if the person comminted against has no interest but for civil law when the plaintiff has no interst in the case again the court can annul all references.

    Criminal cases are considered crimes against society and usually end in jail or prison time,The distinct differences between criminal law and civil law are in the type of action against the defendant and the type of remedy sought. A civil case involves individuals in a dispute and generally ends in monetary reward.

    The definition of both Civil and criminal law is as follows Criminal law is made up of offenses against the state. These offenses represent violations of established legal rules about expected patterns of conduct in society. These violations are prosecuted in the courts and are subject to sanction when a person is convicted. Criminal law involves offences such as murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, armed robbery and tax evasion. However, criminal law can be further categorised into the two main types of offence: indictable offences and summary offences. An indictable offence is a serious criminal offence such as rape, which is tried before a judge and jury in a superior court such as the County Court. A summary offence is a less serious offence such as speeding, which is tried without a jury before a magistrate in the Magistrates' Court. Civil law is the area of law regulating relationships between individuals and groups and providing for compensation where an individual's rights are infringed by others. The purpose of the civil law is to obtain a remedy for a party who claims to have had their rights infringed and who has subsequently suffered loss or injury in some way. As a general rule, any legal dispute not involving a crime is classified as coming within the civil law. Civil law can be divided into many parts including:
