Chemistry - Molar volume

Molar volume

The molar volume of a gas is simply the volume occupied by one mole of the
gas. Molar volumes are quoted at specific temperatures and pressures
because the chemical amount of gas present in a sample also depends upon
temperature and pressure .

Ideal gases - those that obey the general gas equation - are assumed to
have the same molar volume at the same specific temperature and pressure.

There are two general sets of conditions for which molar volumes are
commonly used:

STP conditions have long been used as a reference point for gases. Quoting
volumes at specified temperatures and pressures ensures that accurate
comparisons can be made about chemical amounts present.
