Motivating factors include achievement, advancement, autonomy, personal growth, recognition, responsibility, and the work itself. The "Hawthorne effect" refers to improvements in worker productivity or quality that results from the mere fact that workers are being studied or observed. This observation came from studies carried out at Western Electric's Hawthorne plant during the late 1920s. The experiments validated the idea that people are motivated by additional factors rather than by purely economic factors.

I believe most of the employees of the organization I am familiar with is with Maslow's hierarchy and at the bottom of the pyramid.

Motivational factors are varied and if the basic needs are not met. It is very unlikely that the employees will move to the next level of development. HR needs to understand the needs of each employee and the general motivational factors that will work for whom. I am a combination of the X and Y people. Type Y people are best motivated by encouraging them to achieve their goals and treating them as individuals. Type X people are best motivated within a controlled environment where they are told what to do and how to do it. with that said...I believe proper training can shape any individual into a star employee

Mayo stated that motivating employees was associated with giving adequate attention to the employees and improving the social environment of the workplace. McGregor adopted a theory that stated that employees were motivated according to what type of person they were - type X or type Y. Type Y people are best motivated by encouraging them to achieve their goals and treating them as individuals. Type X people are best motivated within a controlled environment where they are told what to do and how to do it. Maslow established a hierarchy of needs that must be met if employees are to be motivated. The lower levels of need should be met first and management should work their way up the hierarchy in order to fully motivate employees.

As Atari and Mary Ann have mentioned, psychologically there's difference in individuals so should there be difference in motivational treatment per individual from the end of the HRM. So I guess the HRM has more to do in identifying each member of staff from lower level to the highest.

Hmm...But in case of efficient managerial implication combination of Maslow's theory and ERG theory is foremost.

Motivational theories should be applied and used in HRM duties to enchance people and nourished them. this is will make the workplace organize and employee work happy and mostly every people have different aspects, have different identities, and to keep them work together or to understand each one of them is by using these different motivational theories. Not every people are the same.

I fully agree with Mary Ann. Recognizing the need and Psychology of employees by any HR manager is imperative if he must successfully motivate the employees. A midst the numerous motivation theories, the one the HR Manager deems suitable may not necessarily motivate the employees.
