Remote Sensing of Moon and Mars
Apollo 11 was the first spaceflight that landed the first two people on the moon. The first two people to land on the moon are: Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Due to the thin atmosphere of the Moon, remote sensing of the moon is relatively easy and has fewer atmospheric distortions than the earths. Mars is the fourth planet from the sun, and the second-smallest planet in the solar system, after mercury. It is often referred to as the red planet. Moon and Mars are both having a very thin atmosphere, and provide a very good opportunity to be studied through remote sensing. Though the atmosphere of Mars contains dust, it does not affect the remote sensing data much.
Google Earth and its Applications
Google Earth is a special custom design Geographical Information System (GIS) software that can provide a 3D representation of the earth. Google Earth maps the earth by superimposing satellite images and GIS data into a 3D globe, allowing users to see cities and landforms from various angles.
Google earth is able to show various kinds of images overlaid on the surface of the earth and is a Web Map Service Client. It also has an archive of historical images from 1972 till date.
Limitations of Remote Sensing Techniques
Some limitations of remote sensing techniques are: They are expensive for small areas., It requires specialised training for analysis of images.
A human-induced error may be introduced when acquiring data., Powerful active remote sensing systems can be intrusive and affect the phenomenon being investigated., Distinct phenomena can be confused if they look the same to the sensor, leading to classification error. Phenomena that are not meant to be measured can interfere with the image and must be accounted for. The utilisation of remote sensing technology is often oversold Remote sensing techniques are not universal remedies that will provide all the information needed for conducting all forms of studies. Remote sensing techniques have many limitations. But, as time goes by, they is expected to have fewer limitations, thus more utilisations.
