It is important to note that there is no fundamental law that requires a generic material to obey either linear scaling or superposition of separate responses.The material being tested should not possess residual stresses from previous experiments or its essential microstructure should not be changing as a function of time.For a Non-aging Material the response to a step stress test is independent of the time when the step stress is applied except for the temporal translation in time.In Aging Materials the time that the material was created is important relative to when you are carrying out the experiment.The Analogues are designed to model the continuum level or macroscopic responses only and they can not provide microscopic or molecular-scale information about the material.In order to know the Response of Viscoelastic Material, you need to know the path by which it reached that state because the response at a particular point depends on the previous states.For Viscoelastic Materials some of the energy may remain in storage while the rest is dissipated to the surroundings.The Proposition of Linear Scaling is that when you multiply the stress input then your response changes proportionally. The Superposition of Separate Responses can be applied on a test even if the same input is applied in different ways.If a material displays both the linearity of scale and superposition of separate responses for all histories then the response is said to be linear.
