Video 1: Abusive Patriarch and Patriarchal Family
Hello and welcome to week five lectures on Emily. Bronte's what drink Heights and today's session. I'm going to talk about Gothic displacement in relation to the conflict between children and a parent authority. The main heads of household abused, females and males were weak or powerless. This can be seen in their use of various kinds of imprisonments up and fine mint, which takes social, emotional, financial, legal, and physical forms.Mr. Onshore expects Catherine to behave properly and hurtfully rejects her bad girl behavior. It goes ultimatum that Catherine must make a final choice between him or hit turf restricts Catherine's identity. Bye. Forcing her to reject an essential part of her nature. Okay. With loving selfishness, Edgar confines, his daughter, Kathy did the boundaries of thrash cross Grange. There are two important aspects. That Emma, from this piece of credit, firstly, you can see how fathers control their daughters. Mr. Ancho expects Catherine to appear to the norms of society. He wants her to be well behaved and the way he disciplines her does. Impact negatively on Catherine. She is hurt by the way, mr. Onshore disciplines, her, you can see how mr. Onshore his behavior is parallel to the behavior of Edgar. EDCO becomes the father to young Catherine. And his way of discipline is not much different to the way mr. Onshore disciplines, because both of them though, they want the best for their daughters. Try to confine them within the social norms and expectations or physically within the boundaries is off their house. So even though ed guh is a loving father, he is controlling the mobility, the freedom of his young daughter. Happy. You can also see how the word Kathy, the name Kathy is re repeated the name. Kathy is circulated time. And again, implying that things don't change. Drastically for the doctors across generations. Now the other point, the slide that is interesting for us to notice is that hospital also control their wives and that is seen in the way it controlled his wife, correct. Catherine, the daughter of mr. Onshore, he offers her an ultimatum. And says that she has to make the final choice between him or heat and that kind of choice, a forced choice on Kathy, on Catherine, the first Catherine confines, her constricts, her Septem scribes, her, and she is forced to reject an essential part of her nature. And that. Would be he'd cliff. He becomes a part and essential part of, uh, Catherine, because of this ultimatum, you can see that there is a huge emotional toll on her mind. Vindictive Hindleys strips, heat cliff of his position in the family that by trapping him in a degraded laboring position, he cliff literally incarcerates Isabella. As her husband and legal overseer, and later in prisons, both Kathy and Nellie, also, the County is isolated from the rest of the household. After her marriage, to Linda to buy Heath clips, continue four and hatred of them here. Once again, you can see the animosity between the members of the family in buttering Heights. There is animals that they've been to been handling the son of mr. Onshore, and he loved it. It helped a ton of mr. Earnshaw. He brings from Liverpool. There is a kind of a clash between cliff and Hindley, which is ongoing. Why? Uh, mr. Onshore is alive. He has to be upper hand because mr. Sharp does favor hit cliff over Hindley. And when mr. Onshore, Don Hinley tries to get the upper hand and, and, uh, he, uh, puts him in a position which is lower, then that offer family position. So you can see the back and forth going on between members of a family. And this, again, repeats itself when he cliff returns to the Heights. As a rich man and he strips Hindley of his respectability and finally of his procession of weathering Heights before the, see how he live incarcerates Isabella, his own wife, because as a husband, he has utter power over her. And later he imprisons his daughter in law, Kathy and his house key Nelly as well. So. He flips the behavior is completely separate stick and displays his authority over all members of the family who come within his power or the oldest. See how, even after Kathy, the young Kathy's marriage to his son, Linton. She is isolated from the rest of the family. So there is isolation within, um, weathering Heights that is constant for certain members of the family. Now, what is interesting about this idea of incarceration is that this is an important attribute. The idea of degrading somebody. May not be particularly a Gothic attribute, but the notion of shutting people up and checking people out is definitely a Gothic trope. And Vidman especially suffer in this fashion more than the male members. You can see how the first Catherine and the second Catherine. Are shack up within weathering Heights. And the fact that history repeats itself is an interesting trajectory for female growth and, uh, identity for all members of the house. Except for Catherine is an intruder who by becoming the father's favorite will alter the family's balance of power and authority. Gilbert and Goodbar pertinently agreed. He lifts eruption into the family fulfillment of Kathy's wish for the web and expression of the younger child's ambition to become empowered. So we know that he, cliff is an outsider called as the gypsy, because he was found by mr. Unsure on the streets of London pool. So when he is brought into the household, I wondering, huh? It's he does unbalanced the dynamics of power and authority within the house. He becomes the favorite of the father and she is useful to Kathy as well because she wants a whip, a weapon, which can make her empowered. So. He clipped the comes the whip of Catherine, the younger child to accrue power for herself. It was very interesting to see how he cliff fits into the structure of power. Well within watering Heights. And of course his presence, Amber does, um, Hindley because. He that his heat cliff becomes, uh, quite a favorite with mr. On show. Thus Catherine gets her web. She gets it figuratively in the form of a gypsy Brock rather than literally, but nevertheless, it will weapon Brock functions just as she must unconsciously have hoped it would. Smashing her rival brothers fiddle and making a desirable third among the children in the family. So as to insulate her from the pressure of her brother's domination, so you can see how the power dynamics within weathering Heights is shifted the presence of the third child that is hip club. And he. Somehow comes into between, um, Hindley and Catherine and thus shading, the laptop that is kept and from the brothers domination. So he, cliff is Catherine's wish come true, even though he is just the gypsy Brock because he does what he is supposed to by breaking. Um, Catherine's brothers fiddle and becoming the favorite of mr. Onshore as well. And that's the power that images from Hindley is, uh, minimized in some sense, the hostility toward, and the abuse of children and family members at buttering Heights cut across the generations. The savagery of children finds full expression in Henley's animosity to work his life. And in Hitler's plan for when Jen's, as I pointed out, you can see how this natter of vengeance, this trajectory of Wildlands and revenge is carried on from one generation to another children who fought amongst themselves, continued to fight. Once they become adults. And that's definitely the case with Hindley and hit cliff. He returns to the Heights to take revenge, not only with Catherine, but also with Hindley, because he wants to get back on all the wrongs that Hindley committed against hip cliff after the death of. Uh, mr. Onshore, he lead the grades. He cliff turns him into a laborer, pushes them out of the house. Once the patriarch, mr. Shaw is no longer around wrapped in the self centered in his childhood. He claims Henley's horse and uses mr. Unsures partiality to his own advantage. Making no return of affection. Mr. Anchos disapproval of Catherine hardens her and like my many mistreated children. She becomes rebellious despite the abuse, Catherine. And he did show the strength of children just survive and abuse, at least partly form, see adults characters and behavior of Catherine and he fifth and full, just an important bond between them. One can see pretty clearly that. He was not a Saint either. He was equally self centered in childhood and he exploited mr. towards him in order to snatch Hindleys cars. So you can see how the selfishness of China childhood is not properly disciplined away by the patriarch. And we have also seen how Catherine is hardened by the way, she was disciplined by mr. Unsure. So since the disciplining process is not ideal, she also becomes very rebellious and this system of abuse becomes and. Shapes the nature of these children, he cliff and Catherine, and this also structures the adult nature and the past four years an important bond between them. So systemic abuse within the family somehow dictates the character of the adults that they group into.

Video 2: The effect of Intense Suffering
Heathcliff’s arrival, and his deep attachment to Kathy works together. You, her autonomy and power to do as she wishes that is true. Jack pattern authority, children grow in an atmosphere of wild freedom. The affection and mutual dependency is later reinforced by the complicity to overcome the tyranny of the eldest brother. So what emerges from these set of ideas is this. The children, Kathy and Pete, if buttering Heights becomes a God thing, space, a space of power did through handling or through mr. Unsure, and these children, he cliff and Kathy, they walk together to reject, but turn, it's hard to, and later after the death of the specific unsure. These two work together. They become complicit in their efforts to overcome the tyranny of the eldest brought up in the passion driven characters, Catherine he'd cliff and Henley pain leads them to do tone on and to Tom and others. Okay. Inflicting pain provides them some relief. This behavior racist questions about whether they are cruel by nature or are formed by childhood abuse. And to what extent they should be held responsible for or blamed for the crew. These, so there is exceptional dysfunctionality in all the characters. So just Catherine hit cliff and Hindley, especially, and we can see how. They seem to go each other. They seem to kind of not help, but inflict pain on one, another tormenting. The other comes so easily. And in fact, one can argue and say that pain itself provides an outlet for them. It becomes a way of kind of enjoying some kind of relief and such a nature. Of course, prompts us to question whether. This cruelty is in bill, that's it company to them by nature? Or is it the illustration of previous childhood abuse? And what extent are we too? Hold them responsible for their cruel behavior? Yeah. So this I do, of course we'll T inflicted on the other is again, a goddamn got like more tough. So. What becomes extremely bizarre for us is to see them being performed by children as well as by adults suffering also see us the week Isabella and her son Linton become vindictive and Edgar turns into a self indulgent melancholy Rhett clues. The children of love the degraded heritage and the imprisoned Kathy. I able to overcome his thinks abuse and to find love and a future with each other is John Hagan, right? That ring Heights is such a remarkable work, partly because it was white forcibility to bitty victims and victimizers alike suffering is enjoyed by almost all the characters in the novel Isabella and her son, LinkedIn become winded, even though they're extremely weak. The suffering is not, uh, something back today into forgiving. Um, the pot I want to inflict pain is not relevant or pertinent to the powerful alone, Isabella and Linton become self indulgent and melancholic. And not just that we can see how. In their own small ways they can, they become very vindictive and make those who are weaker than themselves. Ultimately, we realized that the degraded, hairpin Hindley and in person, Kathy, the Cathy who is imprisoned in buttering Heights are able to overcome the kind of cruelty that they suffer at the hands of heat cliff. He does degrade done because he wanted to take her revenge on the father Hinley who degraded him when he was at the height and under his mercy after the death of mr. Ancho. So the in imprisoned, Kathy are able to forget the abuse that their past is and come together to find a loving with each other. So while we see all these aspects of suffering, we are kind of forced to think about whether this novel is remarkable, because it does persuade us to pity the victims as well. Along with the victimizers, we pity the pudic Isabella. We pity Linden, the pity. Hindley. So these people are victims as well as victimizes, both Catherine and hit find the body is prisons, which trap these spirits and prevent the fulfillment of the desires. Catherine Yans, to be naked with Kate cliff, with a lost childhood freedom with nature and with the spiritual realm. He wants possession of an union with Catherine. We see how, uh, prisons are not just houses and prisoners are not just figures like heat. Cliff prisons are also bodies. Catherine wants to get out of our body so that chicken find freedom on the Morris as a spirit so that you can find. The freedom that you found as a lost child on the Morris. He wants freedom from his own body so that he can be in union with Catherine. So bodies themselves become prisons in this, uh, not, or don't the oldest saw earlier, how such notion of imprisonment could also be a symbolic imprisonment that the society has become. For free spirits like Catherine and hit cliff confinement also defines the cause of Catherine's life. In childhood. We alternate between the constraint of weathering Heights and the freedom of the Morse in puberty. She is restricted by her injury to a couch at thrash, cross Grange, finally womanhood, and her choice of husband confined her to the gentler date of thrash cross Grange from the, she escapes into the freedom of death. So the first captain's life is a series of imprisonments. Um, she is in prison by the norms of gender, to which she is ordered to follow. And she failed at that by the salting and the disciplining of mr. Onshore. So the wa the freedom. Is offered to her by the Moore's imprisonment, by battering Heights and when she's injured and she's bitten by it, uh, dogs, she is restricted to the couch at home thrash, cross Grange, where she is now back to, um, health. And finally, when she married ed gov, LinkedIn, she is confined to that gentler D of that class. And from the chicken escape only back doing. So you can see that her math is a non or do of confinement. And there is Gothic aspects to such a confinement, a CDs of confinements that she escapes and get strapped into time and time. And again, he'd clipped into the novel possessed of nothing is not given even a last name or family name. And loses his privileged status after mr. Show's death. He'd cliff displaces in the family structure. Okay. It is thrown out of heaven where she feels displaced, sees herself and exile, a trashed cross Grange at the end and wanders the Moore's for 20 years as a ghost, when he enters a novel, he possesses nothing. He's completely devoid of any property. He doesn't even have a surname and. When he enters this, uh, hide, he gets the name of heat cliff and he gets an identity and a privileged status as well. She quickly uses after the death of mr. and he TIF also displaces Hinley in the family structure by becoming a close to the father. First and later hint, he loses his identity. So you can see the C thought of, um, gain and loss with regard to heat, cliff and Hindley and Catherine imagines being thrown out of heaven when she feels displaced and she sees herself as an exile. Thrash cross Grange at the end. So being within the boundaries of trust, cross screen is for her, is for her becoming an exile at the end. And she does wander the was for 20 years. I said go West. So there is a series of, um, examples experienced by certain characters in the novel. And is dispossessed of proper date, education and social status. Isabella cannot return to her beloved thrash, cross Grange and brother Lynton. He gives son is displaced twice after his mother's death being first removed to thrush, crowds, Grange, and then to bartering Heights. If Kathy is displaced from a home and thrush straws Grange, so people are dispossessed of property. As you can see that. Um, he flipped dispossessed, Hindley people don't get education. He cliff didn't get an education hairpin. None of Henley is, um, the word of his, um, education deprived of it. Yeah. He left social status is given and taken away. He gets a social status through the assistance of mr. Unsure, and then it's snatched away by handling. Isabella Mary's, um, hip cliff, because she falls in love with a heat cliff, but she soon realizes that he is not a hero, but a demon of sod. And she wants to return to her beloved home thrash, cross Grange and to her brother, which is not possible. Lyndon hit clips, son, um, and hit cliff and Bella sun is displaced twice after the death of Isabella. First, he is taken into trust, grows grains, but then he is brought back to what drink hide. So you can see how people are, um, champagne between a boat. And Kathy of course, is the. Please from buttering Heights when she marries and, um, goes to the Grange. And when she is there, she feels as if she is an example, um, from her beloved home Wuthering Heights. Now here's some sample questions in the end semester examination, the final, uh, examination. That would be a section one where you will be asked to, um, Find the correct answer from a given list of options. For example, questions can be, uh, like the following. Where did mr. Onshore pick up Hitler from? You we'll have some options, so you need to choose the best option. He didn't get hit different London. He didn't get him from Bart or India. He picks him up from Liverpool. So doc would be the answer. State then there will be a section two where you would be asked to state whether the statement, uh, given, uh, is true or false weathering Heights burns down at the end of the novel. The answer is false. It doesn't burn down at the end of the novel section three would be the shock note section. You're asked to respond in the form of a paragraph, um, containing not more than two 50 words. The questions can be. What, how is nature and culture represented in weathering Heights? And you need to discuss the answer you, you might have to think about what is nature, uh, is it literal nature or is it symbolic nature? People of nature in this novel would mean Catherine unsure. He told us they love going about in the wild need more and culture would be represented by a trash cross Grange, the LinkedIns, especially. So you might want to see how the novel is. In fact, a clash between these two concepts, people of nature, people kind of, um, work with love. Nature are brought into this genteel world of and what the effects on nature as a result, how does have a negative impact on the relationship between he and Catherine Grant? Also beef part of your answer. Thank you for watching. I'll continue in the next session.
