Video 1: Emily Bronte
Hello and welcome to week five lectures on Emily Bronte's watering Heights and today's session. I'm going to introduce the author, Emily Bronte and her very powerful work buttering Heights. Emily Bronte was best known for her novel battering Heights, which was published in 1847. The year of publication tells you that the novel is a 19th century novel. You can also classify it as a Victorian novel. Emily Bronte also wrote over 200 points. So she has been, she had been very fall AFIC in producing poetry and her sister, Charlotte Bronte, who was also a novelist of the 19th century, thought that these forms had a peculiarly of music, wild, melancholy, and elevating. The descriptive terms associated with Emily Bronte's poetry, uh, are interesting because of the tone that they can wait to us. Um, peculiarity is interesting. It means unique, strange, but I'm more interested in the word wild. Wild is significant. And so is the word elevating associated with Emily Bronte's poetry. If you remember the previous lectures on Gothic fiction and they have tropes a B, uh, are reminded of, um, the notion of sublime, uh, sublimity is associated with something wild, perhaps. A very strange and awe inspiring, uh, feature of nature. So when a human being looks at some wild element, um, there is an elevation of the soul melancholy is also interesting because, um, if you remember that picture risk aspects, Of cost Casals and destroyed. Just also create a pleasing melancholia in the viewer to these terms are connected to the idea of the God. Now let us look at, um, the Brown tase and their timelines. Charlotte Bronte was born on 21st, April 18, 16, Emily Bronte on 30th, July 18, 18 and an on 17, January 18, 20, all in Thornton, Yorkshire. They belong to the young chair region. They kind of invented words and created heroes, and you can see how, um, how much they kind of let loose their creativity and imagination through these kinds of creative productions. And these creative deductions are a full runner for the kind of fictions that these sisters wrote. So they imagine native, uh, capabilities are, um, evidenced through this kind of creativity, uh, writing projects, surviving poems about this fantasy world show the influence of what's with all the Scott and Byron. By then Emily was the tallest of the sisters slim and graceful with in the woods, a family friend, Ellen Nussey kindly liquid eyes to a points that we need to note, um, from this comment, uh, set of comments. Firstly, the fantasy world shows us that these sisters, these siblings are very, very well read. Remember the liberal education offered by Patrick Bronte, the father. So they knew about what's with what discord and Barton and their writings. Secondly, We see the character of Emily, uh, coming through in the description of the family friend, Ellen nasty look at the emphasis on her eyes, kindly liquid eyes, very, very, uh, sympathetic, um, uh, personality reflected through the eyes of Emily Bronte. Emily Bronte had a very sensitive personality. She was very reserved and it's an Emma that she was unsuited to life away from Howard. Um, she couldn't live happily and she was taken out of the Yorkshire Morris. So that seems to be, uh, the impression created by such comments about, um, Emily Bronte. If she went away to do a bit of, um, Governors, um, jobs, uh, she found that she fell ill. So, uh, it clearly emerged that she was really passionate about the natural scenery, the, uh, region of Yorkshire, um, Howard stronger than a man Charlotte road. Simpler than a child, her name just alone. Charlotte's calm about Emily Bronte are very significant because you can see how shallot constructs it, personality of Emily Bronte, which makes Emily out as if she is an element of nature. Um, so you also kind of, um, sense contradictory impulses. Um, that seemed too much in association with Emily Bronte. Uh, she is very powerful, uh, according to, uh, Charlotte, more powerful than him man, yet she is also very innocent as a child. And again, the idea of. Her nature being unique. And this comment takes us back to Charlotte Bronte's comments about Emily Bronte retreat, unique forms, French poems. So she is unique in that regard because she is a bundle of contradictions yet. Um, she is also a part of a major in some respects because the innocence, um, and the innocence for how words she faults, like if she's taken away from it, beat for schooling, bead for, um, a governor's position, she has. To be in Howard's to remain a happy and sane and comfortable. So, um, a distinct place analogy of Emily Bronte and marches from, um, this, uh, set of description by Charlotte Bronte. Uh, so, uh, it's very clear that she, she is not very talkative. Um, she, she kind of, uh, she seems to be a positive who is more interested in listening rather than talking, um, child bronze says she could hear of people with interests. And talk to them with detail, minute graphic and accurate, but with them she rarely change exchange the word. It's very perceptive comment about, uh, uh, Emily Bronte, uh, Charlotte Bronte. Her sister's in Preston in people and could talk about them in great detail. My new detail give very, very vivid descriptions and be very accurate as well, but she did not communicate with them, um, which, which kind of tells us that she stuck to her own group, her own family. Uh, so again, the idea that she is not a very. Outgoing person that she is, um, more of an interior character is given to us through these comments. She wrote scarcely, any letters left few recorded and never was shared herself in friendship at this point, according to the critic, Stevie Davis. So again, she's not sorry, uh, communicate of what. The society with the rest of the world around her. Um, so this inability to participate, fade in the world outside. It's very interesting. And that tells us a lot about the woman who created lathering Heights, um, a novel, which is almost claustrophobic. Um, and which is all the heavily glottic in, uh, it's overtones. And one of Emily's pupils. Um, remember she was also a teacher. Um, the pupil says she could not easily associate with others again, not a very, um, sociable character. Um, Emily Bronte is.
Video 2: Wuthering Heights
Emily's work first appeared in print. When on child Bronte's urging a collection of three sisters points was privately published in 1846 under the names of Kara Atlas and acting bell outstanding among them is Emily's new cover. So is mine. A couple of interesting aspects are to be noted from this comment. Firstly, Emily has had to be urged on by Charlotte, so you can once again, see the reserved nature of Emily who is not very interested in entering the public sphere with her creativity. So it's a joint publication as well. The three sisters it does, um, and, uh, published, um, you know, together their output. The second, uh, interesting phenomenon here is the reference to those pseudonyms kata, Atlas and acting bell. Coverup is the pseudonym of a Cabela's the pseudonym of Charlotte Bronte Ellis, um, that of Emily Bronte and act and bell, um, belongs to and Bronte. So women did not use their own names when they wrote, um, it was still not very respectable for women to publish, be part of the public sphere. Um, They then met more, um, you know, you know, uh, supposed to belong, uh, to the private world. They're supposed to manage their domestic heart, uh, spectacularly and not infringe on the public realm, which belongs to the man. Uh, the rhetoric of Emily's up poem is also very interesting. No college Zola's mine. Again, the fierce spirit, the indomitable spirit of the speaker also comes through in that poem. Now let's come to the novel buttering height, um, this massive, uh, Book in terms of the power it contains of the central characters. Uh, it is a landmark novel in the world of English literature. It, is very, very powerful. It's a gripping read. It is full of raw emotions and, um, the Gothic nature of the book never fails to fascinate, uh, the readers. What hides was published in 1847. It is reminiscent of Gonville and it's more or less setting and passionate war between two families. Uh, one review dismissed it as chorus and them, uh, the immediate, um, Perspective that one takes away from this novel is it's a powerful setting. Um, it's very, uh, visceral, uh, description of the more land and, um, There is a connection between the Moore's depicted here in this fiction. And, um, the world of condo created by Emily Bronte and her sister and Bronte. And this is also, uh, a novel about two warring families. Uh, one, uh, family belongs to thrush, uh, cross Grange, the other belongs to what drink. Hi it's. So this is, ah, A book about two families who are, um, at war with them, each other. And when it was first published, um, reviewers were not very. I was sympathetic towards the book and one, I'll call it as very, uh, course flogger and not belonging to society and an abroad and book it's at the hateful book. So you can see, um, the kind of emotions that this book, uh, uh, provoke on the part of, uh, people. Emily Bronte began another novel, but it was destroyed with Charlotte after Emily's death, 30 from tuba club in December 18, 14, eight. So you can see Emily dies a year after getting bedroom Heights published, which was in 1847, a very short life, but a powerful one. And, um, the other interesting element from this. The comment is that Charlotte destroys and other work. Oh, which was doctor, but Emily there's, there's a desire on the part of Charlotte Bronte to protect the memory and reputation of Emily Bronte. Well, I think Heitz was only reskilled from obscurity in the 1880s. Uh, and it was championed. Um, the work was celebrated by Swinburne. Uh, Algernon Swinburne, Matthew, our note, and, uh, GK Chesterton who described it as written by an Eagle. Fantastic. Um, Observation by GQ tested. And, uh, when he calls this work as written by him ego, we are reminded of an Eagle's point of view. We are also reminded of that, the pace, the speed of an Eagle and the, and the very pointedness of it's flight. So it says a raw novel. It is a sharp novel, and it, um, Reveals the wild emotions of human beings, uh, caught at their most passionate. So wondering huts it's been known, published in 1847, under the pseudonym of Ellis bell was intense. It was a very, very intense novel, and very solidly imagined novel. The imagination is whistle, uh, and, and the plot is tight. Um, there are no loopholes in the way this fictional universe is set up, uh, on the part of the right. Uh, and it is distinguished from other novels of the period by its dramatic and poor presentation. It's abstention from authorial intrusion and its unusual structure. So it is a distinct war is on the part of Emily Bronte. You can compare Emily Bronte's works with say Jane Austin. You can see how unusual, uh, Wuthering Heights is. Um, there is no authorial intrusion and it's extremely point Dick and dramatic, uh, in its nature. Now let's look at the plot of weathering Heights briefly. The story is told by one mr. Lockwood. Uh, he's one of the neuritis. So he is a disinterested party. He doesn't belong to the two families that I mentioned a little while ago. Uh, he is not part of the two houses. Is it disinterested party and his not a dove he's right. Counting of the novel and the world around him. Serves as the frame for a CDs of retrospective shorter narratives by, uh, Ellen Dean of housekeeper, Ellen Dean is the housekeeper act, what ring Heights. And she also narrates the story in parts. So we have two narrators, Lockwood, and Ellen Dean one is a disinterested party and the other is a housekeeper to one of the families, all concern. The impact of the Foundling heat lift on the two families of onshore and LinkedIn in a remote Yorkshire district at the end of the 18th century. So the entire story is about the impact of this Foundling Foundling. Somebody who's found a child who was found it's called a Foundling, it's an orphan, and he is brought into the world. Of this, uh, Yorkshire, uh, district he's brought to weathering Heights by mr. Earnshaw and the entire noble seems to be structured around this character. He did, and up have a key causes on these two families of on-shelf and Linton Linton belongs to thrash cross Grange and the unjust belonged to battering Heights. And this novel is set in a remote Yorkshire at the striked. And, um, we all know, um, that the Bronx is belonged to Yorkshire as well. They belong to Howard, which is an option and it is a place overrun by the Morse. And Emily is passionate. Emily Bronte is passionate about the Morris. So you can see how Emily drew upon her personal experiences of the region to write this novel. And the, uh, the timeline of this fiction, Wuthering Heights is late 18th century embittered, but abused and the marriage of campy unsure who shares his Jami nature and whom he loves. To the gentle and prosperous Edgar Linton. He left plants and revenge on boats extending into the second generation. So this is the problem. The problem is that Kathy, um, Shaw, uh, daughter of mr. Earnshaw of what happened. Hi, it's Matt Reese, the gentleman. So in prosperous echo, LinkedIn, and she kind of rejects what rejects heat plus. He flipped his in love with Catherine, um, show eye. He sees that he, that she shares his own stormy nature. And because of this marriage, he leaves the place. And when he comes back, he takes revenge on both families, the unsures and the LinkedIns, and the revenge carries into the next generation as well. Wow. So this is the powerful plot of what the being Heights. Kathy's death in childbirth fails to set them free from his obsession, with her, which persists until his death, the marriage of the surviving heirs of unsure and Linton restaurant's piece. So you can see the obsessive nature of his cliff in what the ring Pines, um, He said he is unable to live, go off Catherine, even after she is dead, he tries to, uh, to go from the grave. He tries to lay next to her in the grave and, and he's able to quit of Catherine only with his dad and, um, the marriage of the heirs of the two families unsure and Linton brings peace to the world of what the rink Heights. Blending realism, Vermont and the Gothic. Some previous taught it immoral and abort and others praised it's old technology and rugged power. So the first point here is very important because it captures the diamond actions of the novel. On the one hand, we have realism on the remount and, and. Both are kind of imbued with the thick and because of this kind of struggle, Joe, it was both original has less rocket. It was raw. It wasn't perfect. It wasn't neat. It wasn't like a nice little laid out garden. It was like the wild mountains. Um, some beautiful, it was taught. It was an immoral, novel and completely boring. The house in the Heights is situated in bleak Moreland. And the wild setting is a powerful presence. As the story unfolds of this novel is a very significant. Is as if almost the more becomes a character in the novel and the wild sex. I think it's a constant presence in, um, as the story, uh, unfolds, uh, you can see comparisons being made between the wild setting and he live the wild setting and Kathy. They all seem to kind of belong together, Kathy. He lives on the Morris. So we need to constantly remember this powerful presence when we read and analyzed this novel. As I pointed out. The text has multiple mattered viewpoints. The major perspectives come from Lockwood was a southerner. Uh, but, um, and, and finds Yorkshire as an alien place. He's a, with the Dar, he is, he's a guest to this world. Um, and it does through his, uh, alien eyes that we have the novel being, uh, the rated, but there was also a mind natto, um, Offered by the serve and figure Nelly Dean who moves between the hides and Brontez contrasting location of, uh, trash cross range. And, uh, most importantly, we have heat levels and dark enigmatic brooding Byronic hero, a character type, familiar to contemporary read us. So it is this hero, which is going to be, um, a major. A feature of analysis in our lectures. This hero is interesting because he is, um, got thick in nature as well. He's a brooding figure is almost as if he is an element of nature. He is mischievous his dark. He has his wild mood. So. This is one of the fantastic, uh, um, persona he clips is one of those fantastic personas of, uh, literature, one who constantly, uh, fascinates the readers.
