Self-empowerment helps me so much. I continued to rely on others and because of that, they pushed me away. I realized I had to help myself first and that's what helped me attract the people that I needed or that needed me. We help one another, at least, admit something was off balance and seek treatment for my mind and body first. Medicines only mask mental illnesses, eating better, exercising and SELF-EMPOWERMENT helps for the long term! Easier said then done, I know, but over time it does become easier.

The limbic system is composed of structures in the brain that deal with emotions (such as anger, happiness and fear) as well as memories . To understand what happens in the brain when a person becomes clinically depressed as well as how antidepressant medications work, it is first important to learn a bit about the function of neurons and neurotransmitters.

I agree that the focus should be on the whole person. Unfortunately, that's not usually the case. Look at most insurance plans -- they either offer primarily "medical" versus "mental" health or force you to choose which one you consider most important. The focus should be on both because that's what makes a person truly well.

Social networks and community resources are a great attribute of the mental health community. Feeling alone in your mental illness and isolated could be very painful for an individual suffering from a mental illness. The modern social model in mental health may help a lot more people that previous models.

The current responses to mental illness/mental health is divided into 2 general models, these are the Bio-medical and the Social model. The dominant themes of the Bio-medical model is the expertise of practitioner to cure or conquer the disease, the disease is the subject of their actions. They act on the illness to overcome it and return the person/patient to "normal". This is "evidence based mental health practice" that engages primarily Psychiatrists to define and treat the specific illness and its symptoms. In general all those diagnosed with a particular illness are treated with similar medications and for the practitioner its a matter of getting the medication of getting the medication cocktail right. Individual or social context of illness is not taken into account. In contrast the Social model sees mental illness/ mental health in a broader individual and social context. The person is seen as a person first not a passive subject of treatment. This model rejects one form of a supposed "social norm" and views diversity as reflecting the broader community. The Social model accepts that there is more than one perception of reality and takes into context the cultural and social context of the individual and draws on their experiences and knowledge to define their position and explores choices and options to deal with issues and situations. The "Medical model" validates the professional the "Social model" validates the individual. Peer Support, Person Centered Planning and Services seek to explore the individuals own personal resources, promotes self exploration and self growth and self determination. It assists and works in partnership with people to expand the their social experiences and networks. Mental health and illness are the subject from which self understanding and personal empowerment and capacity building is the focus. The person is viewed holistically in a 360 degree and they are the focal point of action not their diagnosis.
