The course outlines the development of tourism from ancient times to modern American tourism. Theancient Egyptian empire were the first to travel for specific needs. Travel was advanced by Greek currency and language. During Renaissance, the Grand tour was a popular concept for wealthy noblemen. This ended due to French revolu and napoleonic wars. Spas and seaside resorts now became more popular. The development of railway in USA enabled people to travel across the country. During ancient times people used to travel by stagecoaches. The poor condition of roads led to the need to rest horses every few kilometres. Thus posting houses were developed. John McAdams n Thomas Telford invented a new type of road surface which improved the quality of road travel.the first railway was opened in Europe in 1825. The American rail inspired rail travel in mainland Europe.rail was most popular mode of travel fo approximately 100 years from 1830-1930. Now competition from cars, buses and air travel has led to a decline in railway travel. Ocean liners were first used the 19th century. Air travel has also led to a dramatic fall in the number of people travelling by ocean liners. At present only one ocean liner is in use. As car travel became popular, 'motor hotels' or motels were built to cater to the needs of travellers. Kemmons wilson established the Holiday inn chain and improved the quality of motels. The first hostelries of 17th century evolved into inns. TheCity Hotel in New York was the First Grand hotel. The 19th century saw a decline in the popularity of motels and resurgence in popularity of hotels. Budget hotels became widespread in the 1970s. Today the hotel industry is segmented into upscale, middle market and value conscious. The 3 most important considerations for potential travellers are: time, money and motivation. During the industrial revolution, workers got low pay and holidays were infrequent and unpaid. In 1920s with the rise of trade unions, workers began to get paid vacations. Thus people could afford to travel during vacations. The major financial considerations for most people are financial obligations and surplus income. People spend money on vacations to satisfy their underlying needs and desires. Marslow's hierarchy of needs can be used to create effective advertisements for tourism marketing.
