Grammar -> Lesson Summary
Commas are used to separate words, phrases or clauses.
Commas act as pauses and they can be used to separate independent statements which are linked by: for, and, nor, but, or, yet and so.
Semicolons are used to create a stronger pause than that provided by a comma.
Colons are used to introduce new information, quotations or a list of things.
Apostrophes are used for two things:
To show possession or ownership.
Show when one or more letters have been omitted from a word.
Speech marks or quotation marks are used when recording what somebody has said.
Direct speech records a person’s exact words.
Indirect speech is reporting what someone said without reporting their exact words.
