When there is lot of cross talk / side talk happening in the class, I start a session of small group discussion on the topic that is being discussed. Works most of time!

In the recent past, I have observed that some kids pretend to listen with the eye contact and posture thing. However, I have found it helpful as a teacher to ask thought-provoking questions rather than leading questions to assess my kids. Only Good listeners get them. Then try using videos,songs... to get others involved.

Nowadays the school is facing a new language: a virtual language. The way students spoke once is not the same now. The students are appointed as a new being, the "digital being" that challenges traditional educational systems and impose changes in curriculum proposals and the way in which teachers speak in class. It will be necessary that teacher learns this new form of communication with this being in transformation.

Students contribution in class depends on how well they listen to the teacher. Some students pretends to listen by behaving attentive in class and other good listeners might still capture concepts irrespective of posture or eye contact. A teacher must vary class activities and interractiveness so all students become part of the discussions
