the statement: there are times when it is more important to be able to describe how to drive than actually be able to do it. I think is particularly important when working with people with learning difficulties or physical challenges. It is also very helpful to bear in mind when assessing students in foreign countries. A conversation with a teacher once, during a progress report for a 6 year old child in an English Medium school, she told me the child could not read...I asked if the child could read in their own language. The reply was yes- the education was delivered in English, but it was not English language that was being assessed. The child was able to read. They knew how to read, and how to sound out words and place words in a sentence etc just not in English.

Does operant conditioning work with children with emotional and behavioural difficulties? I can hear a subliminal 'yes' coming through... I have a child that continues to walk amongst stinging nettles with the consequence of nettle rash that is very uncomfortable and makes the child cry. Despite, this happening numerous times - we did want the child to learn from consequence however, fear of this becoming detrimental to the child's health made us eventually cut the stinging nettles down.

approval, sometimes that's all people want is to know that they've done good, or is rewarded for their actions
