Physical Education - Role models
Role models are also created by the media for young children. Role models
motivate young children to start a sport. This is particularly relevant
with football and basketball, but also in lifestyle type activities like
surfing. For instance, Michael Jordan was rated as the most recognised and
admired sportsman in the 90s.
This high level of recognition certainly encouraged a lot of teenagers
(both boys and girls) to take up basketball. Both electronic and print
media can generate role models. The video market is responsible for strong
recognition of role models in non mainstream sports, like surfing, which do
not normally receive a lot of TV time. Many people know of surfers through
the video market.
The purchase of videos again emphasizes the way in which sporting activity
has been made into a commodity. In fact, extreme or adventure type sports
in remote or dangerous locations have become very popular. Examples of
shows depicting these sports can be seen in the extreme games, the winter
extreme games, the advertisements for Pepsi cola and many others.
