    When food is swallowed and broken down, it can be used directly or stored at various places of the body. If it is to be used immediately: • carbohydrate is turned to glucose and remains in the bloodstream • fat is converted to free fatty acids in the blood • protein exists as amino acids in the blood If it is to be stored: • Carbohydrates are converted to glycogen - stored in either the muscle or liver.
