Information Technology - Health and safety effects arising from
organisational change: physical injuries incurred due to overuse or
incorrect use of equipment

Physical injuries incurred due to overuse or incorrect use of equipment

When new items of information technology are introduced in organisations a
whole range of new Occupational Health and Safety factors must be
considered. Whilst Occupational Health and Safety guidelines apply to all
forms of work, our main area of focus is the office environment. Many
companies follow suggestions provided by the Government on correct office
Occupational Health and Safety procedures. Examples of these guidelines are
contained in the and the handbooks.

Try the Occupational Health and Safety worksheet which is intended for use
within a classroom situation.

Discussion questions;

Physical injuries incurred due to overuse or incorrect use of equipment

1. Go to the following Internet site and follow the links to read about General workplace and Office & Business specific OH&S procedures:
http://www.detir.qld.gov.au/hs/safesens/ss_ind.htm

(This is the Queensland Department of Employment, Training and Industrial Relations site, but the information is still relevant to Victoria.)

2. Take the tests for both the General and Office & Business components.

3. When you pass both tests, print out the certificates (see examples below) and hand them to your teacher.

4. What are some impacts on employers and society if employees are injured at work?

5. How is OH&S viewed by many employers? Is it neglected until an accident occurs or are employers more proactive?

6. What OH&S issues have been created as a result of the common use of new technologies, such as mobile telephones, hand-held devices and wireless computing?
