Video 1: Thornfield Hall
Hello and welcome to week six, this lectures on Jane Eyre in today's session. I'll be continuing the discussion on Gothic rebellion and Gothic symbols. I will be focusing in particular the character of the whole porn field and the character, but the Mason Hubbard within the realist buildings, Romano is as significant as Jane's that she spins always builds its boundaries. Adds to her important rather than detracts from it. Eugenia, Della mortise approach is typical of interpretations. That focus on the Gothic elements of the novel boasting Berta as a foil to its realist slash materialist feminism, this interpretative, this interpretive framework, necessitates that she will, but that as the evil, other. The nature of this piece of criticism is to evaluate, but the Mason's role within the realist building strongman. And when we refer to the word. Well, thanks. Ramond we are essentially thinking about the character of Jane Eyre. Okay. And how she grows into a Metro individual and achieves fulfillment in relation to Rochester. Now, uh, the criticism here on the slide is, uh, suggesting that. But the Mason's role is as important as significant as Jane Ayres within the framework of the realist buildings. Romano. In fact, I would argue that this novel is not just a, about the buildings, Romano of, um, particular character, suggest a gene. In fact, Many critics have suggested that this story is as much about the Mason asset is about genes and the way the fact that. Jane is, uh, uncontained. She is not kept within the boundaries that she is those to be within. Um, and the very fact that, that she constantly, because barriers or spells it's boundaries suggest that she is a critical figure within this, not a dumb. In fact, uh, could things have, uh, tried to, uh, juxtapose, but the Mason, uh, as a Gothic, uh, character, and also said her treat her as a foil to the realist materialist. Um, Not dope, um, in relation to a feminism. So this kind of binary, the worst materialist feminism doesn't really work. Um, we cannot treat, but the, as the evil others and Jane, as the representative of, um, The mystic goodness. Um, so this kind of a black and white interpretive framework of this novel Jane Eyre, uh, is, is, um, it's not foolproof the snow. Uh, talk about the nature of, uh, Tony. Okay. Bonfield is undeniably the most God they have all the residences in the novel. To a much more market degree then gets head or no word it's lineaments and character up personal and symbolic. And this I believe is part of Bronte's strategy of a generic dislocation. The country house has traditionally been presented as a symbol of stability and solidity, but chia, it has become the cradle, the unpredictable, the disruptive, and the terrifying. So the entire idea is, uh, the critical perspective of, um, roll away. And what this predict here argues is essentially. A strategy of generic dislocation torn field represents a country house, not though. How about within Jane Eyre within the novel Jane Eyre, this house, this country house is also representative of a different production and that is the Gothic. And when these two, uh, not at this come together, then the ramifications, the implications of this particular hall, uh, become numerous now, uh, in terms of the country house, not at the country house represents. The character and nature of, um, the particular individual who is at the head of it. And at the same time, it represents, um, the heritage of the family that has been okay. That property across town time and therefore the heart in itself derives a particular set of values and symbolic significances. Now we need to understand that the country, the house represents a particular set of meanings, uh, for the people around it, it represents stability. It represents friend, it represents, um, uh, richness. It represents livelihood. Uh, you can think about, um, Pemberley for example, which is a country house in the novel by James in Austin called pride and prejudice and Darcy acid master isn't ideal, um, head of that particular, uh, domestic, um, set up and. Now, when we think about Pemberley, we know what it stands for. It stands for righteousness. It's stands for generosity. It stands for integrity. And those values also mirror the values of, um, mr. Darcy. Now that kind of simple association of meanings become. Problematic. When we think about on field hall within the framework of Jane Eyre, um, because as we know, we, we have several narratives, Jocelyn or, uh, primacy. We have the country house natter of the, have the Gothic narrative and, um, One of the most important areas in which these two narratives overlap is, um, that off the, uh, the domestic set up and its inhabitants. Um, so. While on the one hand, we expect the country house to be stable, strong, and, um, sustainable. Uh, in the case of Jane Eyre, tone, feel hall, uh, becomes, uh, uh, an unpredictable mysterious, um, breast and terrifying space as well. It becomes terrifying. To Jane Eyre, the governess. She is terrified by the sounds and noises. That URI sounds that she hears, uh, coming from a particular quarter of, um, the whole, uh, it is a destructive space with Bertha Mason hunting, um, the whole, and, um, There is an aura of mystery, uh, within the whole. And that, that is a problematic ambiance for, um, Jane Eyre. The, the columns is a slippery thing. Never totally possessed or placed by the senses or the rational mind. This ontological indeterminacy is matched by the most minimal sense of social interaction in the great house. There are hardly any references to tenants or the business of running an F state. There are no clergyman and saving one trip to the church for the wedding. No one in the great house ever appears to attend religious just services. So. This criticism is pointing to a set of factors, which suggest that, um, the, the point feel hall is not participating in any of the activities that are expected of a company three house. What is further interesting is. The idea that it is very difficult to pin down the nature of the house ass got thick, at least according to this, uh, big, uh, Roy, she suggests that the Coptic Istanbul Bush mint can be, uh, arrived art in a sense by looking at the app senses. There's hardly any yacht, the rain there's hardly any reference to, um, tenants. There are no mention of. Uh, the details, um, the details of the various businesses, uh, in world when, um, an S date is, um, functioning, uh, way efficiently, uh, there are no references to, um, Church wizards and all these absences suggest that there is a lucky CUNA of social interaction in terms of this great house. Of course, there are, uh, visitations, um, you know, by a party of people and that is, uh, rare and. It is done in such a way to prove that, um, perhaps, uh, uh, the romantic and matter of that is, uh, uh, developing, um, in terms of Jane and Roger stuff might not really happen because Rochester has his eye on a particular socialist. So, uh, What, what I am trying to get at here is that the house, the country house of Rochester is not really participating in the social economy of the rest of the society. So these absences suggests that there is a, there's a kind of a golf underpinning to the house, as well as to the character of the head of that household. There are hardly any servants apart from the function mrs. Fairfax and gray school, but just a solitary attempt, extra turn I station. Is not a success. The guests are just, Houseparty a shallow wane and beneath condemned, the heroine herself is indulged with attributes that would contribute nothing to them. The smooth functioning of a great house, bride, sexual vitality, it can tank or risk independence and the fields insistence on her own. Right. So once again, uh, Panorama, Roy. Arguing that the nature of the country house is not a kid in to those that we are usually expected to see in, in, in terms of such houses. It is, were the usual signifiers. That suggest a very methodical and proper functioning of that particular house are missing. The Suburbans are not many that there was just the, uh, functional mrs. Fairfax, um, the housekeeper and graceful, uh, who looks after. Um, but the Mason. And the heroin is not somebody who would, uh, uh, efficiently they assist in town. So the smooth functioning of a great house. Uh, remember once again, um, Jane Austen's persuasion, uh, and Elliot helps, uh, in terms of the smooth functioning of that great house. Uh, that's not the case with Jean air here, despite the fact that she is the heroine of the novel. And even though the readers empathize with her and recognize that she is a character who is the predominant, uh, figure in the novel. We realized that she does nothing two and show that that great house pride is a bird because she is an employee and not a character, uh, whom we normally expect as reader, uh, to, uh, become, um, it's mistress. So there are all these factors, which suggests that the house is not genuinely participating in the usual rituals associated with the country house. And Rochester's attempt at socialization, which I just pointed out in terms of the party of friends that he had brings among the rich, there is, um, The particular socialite of whom we kind of assume is the one that dr. Stewart is eventually going to marry. Uh, despite all these, um, attempts we've realized that, uh, the characters that he brings to the house, a shallow Wayne and, um, contemptible on the other hand, the hero, and it is not somebody the, who is, uh, traditionally, um, Perceive to, uh, enrich the nature of such a great house. She possesses characteristics, which are rebellious. Um, she has a section. Vitality is fiercely independent. She asserts her own rights. Um, so all these factors are not something which essentially belong to a woman, uh, who and the strengthening assist in the functioning of such a, uh, house. Um, that'd be called, uh, the country house. So, what is the ultimate significance of these ideas? The fact that the house is not participating, uh, very greatly in the cultural, uh, routine of a society. What, what is the, uh, suggestion here? The suggestion is that the house is not a genuine country house. That's one thing or it's a house that is failing act. What does expect it to be? What we can assume from all these arguments made by Panorama. Roy is dark. The country house logic is. Rejected in this novel alone, we can see that, but not at the, of the country house, also fractures from within, because the house is unable to sustain itself as a symbolic, as well as a literal head of the society around it. Yeah, which is why we see a seat. These are failures on the part of the house and its master they're hardly in itself. And the house does not, uh, um, become the center of, uh, social gatherings. Uh, there is no, uh, female, uh, character who can suitably, uh, become the mistress of this country house. The only female is somebody who is importing principles that are against the well use of the country house. For example, we just saw how, um, Eyre represents a CD's of values, such as sexual vitality, her field streak of independence, uh, her, um, rhetoric of rights and all these did not, um, the set of attributes of the mistress of a country, huh? Therefore, uh, They can reasonably Sue got the country house nodded and logic is disrupted in this novel. And what becomes predominant is though not, or took off, got thick kind

Video 2: Bertha Mason
Country house norms and values quite overtly rejected. Yeah. Jenn-Air Jane in Rochester. What comes of the conventions of the English landed class? He, by what you have being an insider. She asked, we have seen by what you have being an outsider. It may not unreasonably be argued that Rochester's miseries and corruption STEM from his subservience to the demands of his station. Thus, as I have discussed, the country house values are eliminated rejected in Jane Eyre. In fact parama Roy goes on to argue that both Jean and Rochester becomes victims, become victims of this kind of country house logic. He becomes a victim by having to bend to the regulations of the, uh, country, house, um, traditions. He has to be subservient to the demands of the station. And she becomes, she being a reference to Jane Eyre. She has to become I'm an outsider because she isn't employee. So because of all these factors, We see that Jane and Rochester come with terms of certain regulations associated with country house, his wife, Berta, whose marriage to him is arranged to ensure his financial status as a son of a Greek house. It's a symbol of all that is diseased, limiting and hateful of other country house world. The share art played out in Thornfield are the most obvious emblem of the rules. The country house world focuses on the individual. The crucial point here is the marriage of a Rochester to the Mason in order to sustain the wealth off the great house stone field Rochester is forced to marry Barth. Alfie brings him plenty, who brings him a lot of wealth. So one can see how. The idea of the country house becomes so unsustainable that somebody from the outside, somebody from the colonies house to, uh, come to the aid of the country, house, or world. And she does so that there, there are further problems within the domain of the country house. So this is a failing concept. This is a failing argument. The country house is a failing argument and, uh, and when one tries to sustain it through, uh, what I do means. There are further fractures within the home. The standards of butter in this moral scheme has been the subject of extensive discussion Gilbert and Gilbert, her among others, speak to endo the West Indian mad woman with a voice for own, and to establish the sisterhood of the two. Mrs. Rochesters are put into their reading. This is different. It's mirrored in field self. So we saw in the previous session, how, um, there is a symbolic connection between, uh, the two of mrs. Rochesters. Um, one is about the amazing, the mad woman, uh, in the attic. The other is Jane Eyre. The second, mrs. Rochester. Now this subject has been, um, one of the things, the concerns of this novel and. What parama Roy argues is that this sisterhood is missing in the hole itself. I don't feel it's the house of Jane's life, it's flows and walls. The architecture of our experience, the attic, all the pollutions of the house of concentrated as the Lucas of Jane's furious and discontent and Bertha. The genius of the attic is Jane's truest and darkest, double. And acting against structures. Don't want feel all Jane's camouflage hostilities one can see that there is a close association between Jane Eyre and the whole itself in a very, very symbolic way. When can argue that, then don't feel whole comes into being. When Jane and tusk that space, therefore the house becomes the house of G life. All its floors and walls reflect the experience of Jean that come into being through Jane's eyes, through her mission. In fact, Jane's anger and discontent are. Figured in the personality of Bertha Mason herself. In fact, parama Roy called, but the amazing, the genius of the adtech, because she is genes towards double. She is her twin Bertha. Mason is hurt Wayne and together, but, and Jane. React against rebel against Rochester and Von fields hall and their protest against the hostilities that are embedded structurally and ideologically within the hall and all that. It stands for this argument set forth and the mad woman in the attic is ingenious and largely well-reasoned, but at least admit a little misleading. We cannot ignore or trivialize the homology between project standpoint, field on the one hand. And, but then in Rochester on the other. Not only is there a physical similar to you between the Lander gentlemen and his country house? His destiny is intimately wedded to that. And this affinity is validated by the Apple Cal uptick even enrich. Fire destroys the one and means the other one can argue that there is a close association between Jane Eyre and Bertha Mason, and that the two figures are twins. The boots of, um, One another, there's also a very strong similarity association kinship between Rochester and on field hall. There's also a homology in association, a resemblance between Bertha and Rochester. So the country house is representative of the values of its muster. The destiny of Rochester is the destiny of the house. In order for the house, Rochester has to marry. Bertha Mason, the rich woman from Western DS and therefore when the houses attacked, the houses are under threat. When the house is burned down. The master is also Maine. The process is injured in the process. So I pack on Palm field on the part of, but amazing is an attack on the person of Rochester. It is an attack on the country house values. It is an attack on the principles that undergrad, the country house. So does one can very strongly argue that, but, uh, and dropped a store. Our twins are, are doubles of one another. They are, uh, mirrors of one another. And Rochester's destiny is very, very closely intertwined with the destiny. Awesome. But the two has a subliminal subliminal rapport with her reluctant husband in her size and strength and powerful appetite. She has obvious resemblance to Rochester. She is a pyromania and he is described in the imagery of fire. Even their wines are of a kind, he marries her because his sons is very excited and he maintains a succession of mistresses after the failure of their marriage. She is unchaste and her infidelities accelerate hardest and into the madness that accompanies the tertiary stage syphilis here. Uh, parama Roy, they clearly lays out the re uh, the clothes worn between Rochester and both the incomes of the values that they hold. Dear. Both of them. How powerful Aphrodite in, in this kind of, uh, characterization, they are with one another, the advices as similar, she is addicted to fire, and one can see that the imagery of fire is used to describe Rochester. And at the failure of the marriage, she, uh, is. Disloyal justice. Rochester is he maintained a series of mistresses and therefore one can see how the madness off, but the Mason is also connected to the character that she has built for herself, which is a mirror to her husband, Rochester. So one cannot, uh, absolutely, uh, disassociate the two and say that she is not similar to Rochester. She is simply, you're not an alien demon, but a part of a separate life. She's married to him after all and much though, he abominate the fact and awards acknowledging her existence. She is gone office. Um, Of his bone and flesh of his flesh. And she continually emerges in wildland and unpredictable ways. What Roy here is stating is dark. She is not completely a stranger. The Rochester. She is not completely an alien demon. She has the same faults and Follies as her husband has a, she is, the morning of is born in the flesh of his flesh, which means that she is representative of the suppressed, uh, qualities that he displays. Therefore, when she emerges in wild and unpredictable ways, she is manifesting some of the attributes that brought us to the heart has breasts. So she also becomes an embodiment of the repressed nature of Rochester himself. You cannot simply argue that she is a woman from the colony and therefore her. Attributes, um, are representative of that other world. The alien world is strange world, which is outside of Britain. How do we ultimately assess Bertha Mason, Jane Eyre and Rochester in relation to Colin field hall, as I have been discussing with the help of CDs of could be exposed by, um, call us to just pet Rama, Roy. Yeah. There are several undercurrents in the novel Jane Eyre. And some of these matters are in relation to the sentence speciality of domestic city on field. Cool. And Thornfield hall is not just any house. It is a country house, which means it is economically responsible for the wellbeing of. The landed, uh, the landless laborers who work on the lens of, uh, Rochester, but that kind of principle, that kind of economic bond between, um, the country house of Rochester and it's is missing in the novel. There, there are hardly any references to the functioning of the country house. Which makes us wonder what is its purpose? Mmm. That leads us to the second aspect of the house. This house is present in Jane Eyre, not to indicate it's funny within society. It becomes a leftover, a cultural leftover or, and a leftover or without any economic significance becomes a dark space. And it is in relation to that dark space. The entire narrative of Jane Eyre, Rochester and Bertha Mason is Wolverton brought to stilt, becomes a problematic figure. And Jane air enters. The world of Rochester, the wreck about him from the dark side by eliminating his connection to, but the Mason, a measure of happiness is insured for Rochester and Jane Eyre. Thank you for watching against you in the next session.
