Overcoming Resistance to Your Proposals

Change is always difficult to implement in any business. This unit is designed to help you build your own change management skills.

Imagine that you work in a company and believe that change needs to take place. This change could range from anything to how work is completed to using a new piece of software or equipment, however the people around you do not seem convinced. They are resisting your great idea.

The tips given in this unit will help you along the way to make sure that change happens.

Listen to your Co-workers

When trying to implement change, it is of utmost importance that you listen to your co-workers, especially the people who are resisting the change that you are trying to implement.

While you may think that your idea is great, listening to those who resist may give you valuable ideas about why it may not work.

This may provide you with a valuable perspective and allow you to re-design your plan for change, making it more successful in the long run.

Gradual Change

If the change that you are proposing has the potential to completely change your business, you may want to reassess your strategy before you try and implement it.

Some people will always resist change, before you try and implement such change you need to ask yourself, is your change revolutionary?

If you are trying to change dramatically the way things are done, you will find that resistance is greater. If your proposal involves incrementally making things better, you may have better luck.

Involvement

As you are planning the change, be sure to involve as many of your co-workers as you can.

This will given them a greater sense of involvement in the change and may lead to the supporting the change, not resisting it.

Instead of providing the solutions, make them part of the solution. If they admit that there is a problem and participate in planning a way out, you would have to do less convincing when it is time to implement the change.

Examine Yourself First

Before trying to implement change, it helps to think of how you are thought of in your company.

Assess your credibility. When trying to persuade people to change their ways, it helps if you have a history of suggesting implementable changes. Otherwise, you may be ignored or met with suspicion.

This means you need to establish trust and a history of keeping promises over time before you propose a major change.

Be Prepared

When proposing a change, you need to be prepared.

Before you get to the stage of proposing the change to your co-workers, you need to have everything in place so that you can present the proposed change in a positive and informative manner.

Present data to your audience. Be prepared to defend the technical aspects of your ideas and provide evidence that your proposal is likely to work.

Present Change in Positive Manner

Be sure that you appeal to your audience’s ideals when proposing change.

Try and frame your proposal around positivity and what you believe the change will achieve in the long-run.

If you believe that the change will create happier clients or lead to a better reputation for the company, make this clear from the initial stages.

Identify the long-term goals you are hoping to accomplish that people would be proud to be a part of.

Have an Open Mind

If you are experiencing resistance to your proposed change, try to understand the reasons for this resistance.

Is your audience resisting because they fear change? Does the change you propose mean more work for them? Does it affect them in a negative way?

This will provide you with a valuable perspective that you may have neglected in the initial stages of composing your change, allowing you to improve it in the long run.
