Components of Construction Drawings
A complete set of construction drawing typically includes a plot plan, foundation plan, floor plan, elevation drawings, details, electrical drawings, HVAC (heating ventilating, and air conditioning) drawings, and plumbing drawings.
Construction projects involve professionals from many different building professions, from architects to engineers to plumbers.
Construction drawings form the basis of agreement for how a building will be built.
To complete a plumbing installation, you need to understand how to read all types of drawings.

The plot plan, also known as a site plan, shows the location of the building on the property. It shows where utilities, such as the water pipes, storm sewers, and gas mains are installed. The plot plan also indicates where you may not build on certain parts of the property.
Setback and Easement
For example, setback requirement establishes the minimum distance that must be maintained between the property line and the structure.
Easement specifies places on the property where the utilities can be installed.
The foundation plan shows the lowest level of a building, including concrete footing, slab, and foundation walls. It may also show the drainage, waste, and vent (DWV) piping and the water supply piping that must be installed below the first floor.
The floor plan shows an aerial view of the layout of rooms on each level of a building and the shape and size of each room.
Think of the floor plans as showing a view of a building from above it if the roof were removed.
Elevation drawing shows the vertical elements of a building. It shows the height and width of interior or exterior walls.
Details are enlarged drawings of important structural elements or special features of the building such as cabinet or staircases. This drawing is usually presented as a part of the main drawing.
Because they are enlarged, details drawing lets you see an area of the drawing more clearly.
Electrical drawing is sometimes superimposed on the floor plan.
It shows how the lighting and power layout will appear on the plan. It also shows the location of the outlet, switches, and electrical fixture, including electrical controls and programmable controllers.
HVAC drawing is superimposed on the floor plan. This drawing shows the location of the furnace and air conditioning equipment, as well as the location of ducts and registers or piping and radiator.
The HVAC drawing includes an electrical diagram that shows the electrical circuitry for the HVAC system.
HVAC plan includes both mechanical and electrical drawings.
Plumbing drawing is superimposed on floor plans. Plumbing drawing shows the piping system, with the location of fixture and pipe runs and the size and type of pipe to be installed.
It also shows the diameter of each run of pipe and the fittings required to make the installation.
Coordination drawing is a dimension drawing with elevation and section, if needed, which indicates the proposed routing of system components and resolves the conflict that may occur with building elements and other trade contractors.
