Before starting to cut, determine what kind of saw and what kind of blade is most appropriate for the material you are cutting.
Carefully measure and mark the dimensions of the cut (its distance, angle, and depth).

The hacksaw is a multipurpose tool used to cut metals. Hacksaw types include PVC saws and sheetrock saws. Mini-hacksaws often come with 6-inch-long blades called Tiny Tims, which are commonly used by plumbers.
Hacksaw blades differ in length, flexibility, the set (or bend) of their teeth, and coarseness (number of teeth per inch), depending on the material they are made to cut.
The hacksaw blade most often used to cut pipe is a flexible-back blade.
Its teeth are set, which means each tooth is bent to alternating sides so the blade cuts a kerf (the groove made by saw blade).
The kerf is slightly wider than the blade. This prevents the blade from binding, and it reduces the friction that results from cutting.
Blades are typically very coarse. Keep the blades sharp to make a good cut.
A reciprocating saw is electrically powered and can be used with a variety of blades. The choice of blade depends upon the material to be cut.
A shaft pushes the blade forward and back. At the front of every reciprocating saw is a shoe plate.
A reciprocating saw brings brute force to bear on a task and is designed for use on hard-to-cut materials.
• Never use a reciprocating saw without the shoe plate.
• Like all electrical tools, this saw must be grounded to an earth ground.

Abrasive saws are used to cut pipe and other materials. These saws use a special wheel that can slice through either metal or masonry.

The main difference between the two is that the demolition saw is not mounted on a base.
Demolition saws run on either electricity or gasoline. These saws are effective for cutting through most materials found at a construction site.
Although all saws are potentially hazardous, the demolition saw is a particularly dangerous tool that requires the full attention and concentration of the operator.
A chop saw is a versatile and accurate tool. It is a lightweight circular saw mounted on a spring-loaded arm that pivots and is supported by a metal base. Because of its size and weight, it is often portable.
