Types of Stairs
There are many ways to classify stairs. One way depends on whether they are open, closed, or a combination of open and closed.

Building codes usually have special requirements for closed stairs. Refer to your local codes before construction.

When a series of steps are straight and continuous without breaks formed by a landing (platform) or other construction, they are referred to as a flight of stairs, staircase, or stairways.

Stairs can be categorized under one of three headings: straight run or straight flight stairways, platform stairways, or winding stairways.

Click on each stair category to know more:
Straight Run
Straight run stairways run continuous from one level to another, without any breaks in the progression of steps.

This type of stairway is the easiest to build. However, it requires a long stairwell, which can cause space utilization problems in smaller structures.

Platform Stairs
Platform (landing) stair design includes a landing where the direction of the stair run usually changes. The landing stair is designed to accommodate a more limited space.

Winding Stairs
Winding (geometrical) stairs are circular, elliptical, or spiral and gradually change direction in their ascent from one level to another. The geometric change in this type of stairways can be anywhere from 90 to 360 degrees from the starting point.

Geometrical stairs can be dangerous, and should be used only where no other method is feasible.
