Carpenters working in the construction trade need to know more than just carpentry skills -- they should also know how to read construction drawings, specifications, lines, symbols, and abbreviations.

The ability to interpret these drawings and written instructions is vitally important in building a structure as per the architect/structural engineer's plans.

Construction drawings are assembled into a set called a drawing set, which includes architectural drawings and title sheets. Architectural drawings include the following:
• Plan View Drawings
• Elevation Drawings
• Section and Details Drawings
• Structural Drawings
• Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical Plans
• Shop Drawings
• As-Built Drawings
• Soil Reports

A title sheet placed at the beginning of this set acts as an index to the drawings in the set. It also contains information about the building project such as its location and size.

There are certain guidelines when it comes reading and interpreting a set of drawings. Following the steps in the suggested order would ensure maximum understanding of the drawings and specifications.
