Carpentry is an ever changing trade. It began during the latter part of the Stone Age, with early humans building better stone tools to shape wood. Bronze tools replaced the stone ones later in that period. With the Middle Ages, a movement started which saw carpenters specializing in specific roles.

This age also saw the invention of a significant tool – the carpenter's brace. The use of steel-edged tools, crude iron nails, and screws took the trade into its modern age.

In the modern age, carpentry involves the use of synthetic building materials and ever improving tools. The profession requires carpenters to stay in tune with these new and improved ways of construction, as well as with the safety procedures.

Modern-day carpenters may have to work in both the commercial and the residential sectors. There is an increasing demand for carpenters in the construction industry, too. Here a carpenter can progress from being an apprentice to becoming a contractor.

In order to be successful in this trade, a carpenter should possess physical strength, good hand-eye coordination, attention to detail, and the ability to perform math calculations.

When it comes to work, a carpenter needs to display a professional attitude. A conscious effort also needs to be made to develop good working relations with others.

Continuous training and up-to-date knowledge about the technical advancements made in the trade are other crucial requisites needed to advance in this profession.
