Age - Certain age groups tend to play certain sports. Younger people will usually pick the more physically demanding sports such as hockey or rugby, whereas older people are often limited physically and pick less strenuous sports like bowls and swimming

Participating in sport: - socio-cultural factors - age Age There are many activities seen as being appropriate to certain ages or stages of life. Levels of fitness and the body's ability to cope with high stress activities tend to make full contact sports less suitable for older adults. Conversely, gymnastics seems to be most suited to younger athletes due to the requirements of flexibility and the demands of the sport. Lawn bowls or croquet may be perceived as retirement sports, thus limiting the involvement of younger participants. (Note: the current Victorian champion in croquet is only 18 years old.) In fact, some sports may find it difficult to incorporate different ages into their structure because of the arrangements they have. For instance, competition opportunities for young females in pennant lawn bowls are limited because most pennant is played midweek on a Tuesday from 12:00 to 4:00. Thus restricting the involvement of those employed or at school on this day!
