Physical Education - Participating in sport: socio-cultural factors -
ethnicity
Ethnicity
Often your ethnicity plays a role in the sports you play. The prevailing
weather conditions, culture, facilities and tradition are usually reflected
in the activities pursued. The increased level of immigration in Australia
and the diverse range of cultures means that compared to 30 years ago,
there is probably more choices in the sports or activities on offer.
Being a member of a certain culture may mean that socialising factors at
work on you will mean you are expected to participate in, or are exposed
to, the traditional sport of your culture. Thus if you are male and have a
European influence, it may be that you play soccer. Cycling is also seen as
a major sport in France and European countries, whereas in Australia it is
much less mainstream. If you are Italian and middle aged, you may play
Bocce. These influences can become less influential with each generation.
